Sensitive teeth? Read this to find out more on how you can curb this issue

According to a study by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSK) in Singapore, about half of Singapore consumers have experienced dentine hypersensitivity, with a significant number of latent sufferers among the young aged 15-24. Among those who experience sharp pain, only 37% have tried using sensitive toothpaste.

Dr Kelvin Chye- the Clinic Director of Victoria Dentalcare (with 2 branch clinics in Shenton Way and another in Rivervale Mall) explains the causes of sensitive teeth- “We are fortunate to have the enamel to protect our tooth. We often do no realise the amount of abuse we subject out teeth to. Many people today are increasing their consumption of soft drinks, fruit juices and sports drinks, which are high in acid content The acid in these drinks as well as in coffee and tea can wear away the enamel layer, and over time give rise to sensitive teeth. The situation is made worse when they hold these drinks in the mouth to enjoy the flavour or the fizzing, which increases exposure to the acids and sugars in the drinks.”

Sensitive Teeth- Preventive Measures:

  • Manage the consumption of acidic food and drink e.g. carbonated drinks, sports drinks, citrus juice, fruits, tomatoes and pickled food in the diet
  • Use a straw to drink, directed to the back of your mouth, and reduce contact with your teeth
  • Rinse mouth with water after consuming sweet and acidic food
  • Use special fluoride toothpaste like the new Sensodyne Rapid Relief

Tips to Managing Sensitive Teeth:

  • Use a soft or medium toothbrush
  • Avoid overly frequent or aggressive tooth brushing
  • Brush teeth gently in a circular motion
