Essential Parental Controls Every Parent Needs

5 min read
Essential Parental Controls Every Parent Needs

Is your child using your phone? Discover how to set up parental controls to keep them safe online!

Parental controls are essential tools for any parent navigating the digital landscape with their children. These features help you manage what your kids can access on your devices, keeping them safe from inappropriate content. Whether you’re handing your phone to your toddler for a quick distraction or letting your older kids use a tablet, knowing how to use parental controls can make all the difference.

Why You Need Parental Controls

As parents, we want to protect our children while also allowing them to enjoy technology. Parental controls help bridge that gap. They not only prevent kids from accessing unsuitable content but also limit screen time and keep your private information secure. Imagine a scenario where your little one accidentally opens an app that leads them down a rabbit hole of unwanted content.

With the right parental controls in place, you can avoid these situations altogether.

How to Set Up Parental Controls on iPhone

Setting up parental controls on your iPhone is straightforward. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

  1. Open Settings: Begin by going to the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Select Screen Time: Tap on Screen Time. If you haven’t enabled it yet, you’ll need to set it up. This feature allows you to monitor how long your kids are using their devices.

  3. Set a Passcode: Choose a passcode that only you know. This prevents your child from changing the settings.

  4. Limit App Usage: Under App Limits, you can decide how much time your kids can spend on certain apps. For example, if you want to limit their gaming time, set a daily cap.

  5. Content Restrictions: Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions. Here, you can block explicit content, limit web browsing, and manage app downloads.

Using Guided Access is also a great feature for younger children. It locks the device to a single app, so they can’t wander off into other areas of the phone. You can enable this feature by going to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access. Set a passcode and triple-click the side button while in the app.

Setting Up Parental Controls on Android

For parents using Android devices, Google offers a similar set of features through the Family Link app. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Download Family Link: Start by downloading the Family Link app from the Google Play Store.

  2. Create a Family Group: Follow the prompts to create a family group. This will allow you to manage your child’s device settings.

  3. Set Screen Time Limits: You can set daily screen time limits that align with your family’s routine. This way, your kids know when it’s time to put the device down.

  4. Manage App Permissions: Use Family Link to approve or deny app downloads. This ensures your child is only accessing age-appropriate content.

  5. Restrict Content: Just like with iPhones, you can limit mature content through Family Link. This is particularly useful for keeping tabs on what your child is watching and playing.

Going Beyond Basic Parental Controls

While basic parental controls are a great start, consider additional features for more comprehensive oversight. For instance, if you have multiple devices, you might want to sync settings across all of them. On iPhones, you can enable “Share Across Devices,” which applies the same restrictions on all devices linked to your iCloud account.

For Android users, Google Family Link allows you to manage settings across multiple devices, ensuring that your child follows the same rules whether they are using a phone, tablet, or another device.

Encouraging Healthy Technology Habits

As you set up parental controls, it’s equally important to foster healthy technology habits. Here are some tips to encourage responsible device use:

  • Establish Screen Time Rules: Create clear guidelines about when and how long your kids can use their devices. This helps set expectations and makes it easier to enforce limits.

  • Model Good Behaviour: Children learn by example. Show them how to use devices responsibly by limiting your own screen time, especially during family meals or bonding activities.

  • Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate certain areas of your home, like the dining room or bedrooms, as tech-free zones. This helps promote face-to-face interactions and family time.

  • Encourage Educational Use: When introducing screens, focus on educational apps and content first. This not only makes screen time productive but also teaches children the value of using technology responsibly.

Final Thoughts

Parental controls are essential tools for guiding children’s screen use. Whether it’s controlling what they can access on an iPhone or setting time limits on an Android, these features help keep kids safe and reinforce healthy digital habits. By setting boundaries, modelling responsible phone usage, and leveraging technology, you can give your children the best start in their digital journey.
