It’s that time of the year again when you celebrate 1 June in a special way with your kids – all in the safety and comfort of your own home. From starting your own reading club, to gardening and movie nights, there is a lot that you can do together as a family and celebrate your role as a parent. 

So this International Parent’s Day, let us help you get started with some fun parent child relationship building activities that are sure to keep the entire family engaged.

1. Lay out an indoor family picnic

You don’t have to go to the park to enjoy a peaceful picnic with the kids. In fact, you can simply lay a picnic blanket in your living room, prepare a few snacks and voila!

You can go all out and have several plates of finger food and refreshing drinks to beat the summer heat. 

Before the picnic, you can even have parent and child relationship building activities. Like what, you ask? Well, like getting your child to help you in the kitchen. You can even give them the responsibility to choose the menu and help you prep during the cook. 

2. Bring out the board games

Playing games together is one of the best parent and child relationship building activities. While competing or working together you also get to bond with each other. 

You can have some indoor fun with a few board games that may even help your child’s cognitive skills. They can even improve your little one’s hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. 

There are many board games that can cater to both adults and children’s entertainment such as Monopoly, Hape Shark Fishery, chess and so much more!

3. Baking time!

Having your child help around the kitchen is a great bonding activity. This is mainly because it requires teamwork and helps kids develop essential skills such as basic math and language.

Baking is one of the best parent and child relationship building activities as it satiates a child’s greatest desire: sweets! So preparing their own dessert recipes can be an emjoyable activity for you both!

4. Read storybooks together

Story time is the best time! There is no doubt that kids to hear stories, especially when narrated, and if its done by the parent there is nothing more enjoyable for them. So this is one of the most significant and perhaps even calming parent and child relationship building activities you can try.  

You can even ask your child to read out his/her favourite books. The best part about this activity is that it works both ways and is enjoyable either way.

5. Do some indoor gardening

Practice your green thumb with your child by sowing some seedlings and a planting a few plants together. You not decorate tour house with something green, you also teach your child about the importance of preserving nature.  

Plus, indoor plants ensure that the air inside your home is free from any toxins. 

So this International Parents Day, freshen up your home by planting some plants and succulents with your child. 

6. Play dress up

Playtime is important for child development. Look through your closet for some old costumes or adult clothes that your child can wear for this activity. 

You can innovate scenarios or stories together and act them out. If your child has a favourite character, you can reenact their adventures to broaden your kiddo’s imagination. 

Before changing back, you can also do a mini family photo shoot in your dress-up costumes to commemorate the day.

Having to stay indoors is the perfect time to re-watch some of your favourite movies or catch up with those you haven’t seen. A little more screentime wouldn’t hurt, especially if you get to cuddle up with the family and enjoy a good movie.
