On the evening of November 5, taxi driver Benny Yeo probably thought he had seen it all in his 18 years of professional driving. But his last job of the day was anything but ordinary. He received a message from his next passenger that read: “Thank you, giving birth.” Little did he know, Yeo was about to become part of a miraculous event — a woman gives birth in a taxi.

Yeo picked up Mr. Yutaro Kitahara and his wife, who was already in labour, from their home in Bishan. Their destination was the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
However, baby boy Yuichiro Kitahara decided to make his grand entrance during the 10-minute taxi ride. This marked the first time a baby was delivered in Yeo’s taxi.
Rising Above the Challenge
Despite the initial shock and worry about a potential mess in his vehicle, Yeo’s sense of duty prevailed. He recounts, “When the sense of duty comes in, quite honestly you don’t care about anything else.”
His primary concern was ensuring the safety of the mother-to-be and her child.
The Miracle of Life in the Backseat
The ride took a turn for the dramatic when Mrs. Kitahara announced that the baby’s head was out. Shortly after, Yeo heard a “pop” followed by the newborn’s first cries.
These sounds brought immense joy to the experienced driver. In his words, he felt “very happy” knowing that both mother and child were safe.
Even amidst the chaos, Yeo maintained his composure, focusing on the road while the miracle of life unfolded in the backseat.
A Safe Arrival and Gratitude Expressed
Upon reaching the hospital, medical staff quickly attended to the mother and newborn. As for Yeo, he had his taxi thoroughly cleaned after the eventful journey.
Mr. Kitahara expressed his gratitude by paying for the cleaning expenses and giving Yeo an additional $100 for his trouble. Yeo’s swift service and professionalism were also recognized by taxi operator Strides Premier in a Facebook post.
