Woman Gives Birth in Taxi On The Way To Hospital, Driver Hopes To Reach Out To Know If They They Are Well

The delivery took 15 minutes but felt like a lifetime for the cabby.

A pregnant woman who was in labour and giving birth in a car gets an assist from a quick-thinking taxi driver. Read all about it here.

In this article, you’ll read:

  • Woman about to give birth in taxi
  • Quick-thinking driver wants to know how the baby is doing
  • What to do when you feel like giving birth on the way to the hospital

When your water breaks, there’s no choice but to push the baby out—even if it means you’re only halfway to the hospital. This pregnant woman giving birth in a ComfortDelGro taxi car left such a big impression on the cabby that he hopes to reach out to the new mum.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (9 February) by ComfortDelGro Taxi themselves, Cabby Tan Boon Hoe recalls the unexpected experience he had back in January of a pregnant woman giving birth in his car.

On 13 January at about 4:00 in the morning, Cabby Tan picked up a couple from Ubi, unknowing that his taxi would soon be a delivery ward.

The couple wanted to go to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). It was then that he noticed how the pregnant lady passenger appeared to be experiencing abdominal pain.

When they were already halfway to the hospital, the woman’s water bag broke and she shouted, “The baby is coming out!”

Cabby Tan panicked at first but managed to calm down so that he could help. He suggested going to Parkway East Hospital instead since it was about 10 minutes away from where they were.

The couple agreed and when they arrived at the hospital, the husband called for the nurses and doctor. The medical staff came out and decided to deliver the baby in the taxi.

The entire process took about 15 minutes, but the cabby said it felt like a lifetime!

Afterwards, the husband approached Cabby Tan to thank him and even gave him a tip. He was also compensated by the company for the time he took cleaning up the vehicle.

This was the very first time the veteran cabby witnessed a birth in his taxi in his 24 years of driving a taxi.

“It was a very special moment for me to witness a miracle in times like these – like a promise of a new life,” he said.

Since it was a street hail trip, Cabby Tan was unable to get the couple’s contact details. Everything happened so quickly after the couple were escorted into the hospital. He wanted to know how the new parents and their newborn baby are doing.

“It will really be nice to know they are well and also if the birth certificate actually says ‘born in taxi’!”  said the driver.

What to do when you’re about to give birth on the way to the hospital

A pregnant woman giving birth in the car. We just see it in the movies, but it can actually happen in real life. Trust that you will not be the first pregnant woman to have your baby in the car – a lot of women experience the same thing, and their babies were delivered safely. So what do you do when, like the pregnant woman in the story, you feel that your baby’s about to come out?

The first thing you have to do is stay calm. Panicking will not help, and might just prevent you and your companion from thinking straight. Check out these few tips:

  • Do your breathing exercises. This will help you relax and focus on the task ahead.
  • Don’t forget to time your contractions.
  • Calmly but clearly instruct your driver to take you to the nearest hospital. But if you feel that baby’s really coming, pull over and put your hazard lights on.
  • Call your OB-gynaecologist if time permits so she can talk you through the delivery step-by-step and contact emergency services for you.
  • If you can’t go through with your doctor, call 999 and inform them of your situation and exact location.
