In a joint news release, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) have announced increased surveillance in Boon Lay due to potential Zika transmission.
The area, including Boon Lay Shopping Centre and Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village, is being closely monitored following a reported Zika case in December.
Persistent Zika Signals Detected in Boon Lay
Despite no further Zika cases being reported since December, enhanced mosquito and wastewater testing has revealed ongoing Zika virus signals in Boon Lay.

This suggests that Zika transmission could still be occurring in the area. The authorities are urging residents, especially pregnant women, to protect themselves and monitor their health closely.
Increased Precautionary Measures in Boon Lay Against Zika
While precautionary control measures have been ramped up, MOH and NEA cannot rule out the possibility of more cases. This is because many infected individuals may display mild or no symptoms.
Doctors in the area have been alerted to be vigilant and to test for Zika among patients with compatible symptoms, especially those residing or working in Boon Lay.
Protecting Boon Lay Residents from Zika
Residents who feel unwell with symptoms such as rashes, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and/or conjunctivitis (red eyes) should seek medical attention immediately.
They should also inform their doctors about their residence and workplace locations. Since November, NEA has been conducting “intensive vector control” operations in Boon Lay, where dengue cases were also reported.
Zika Health Advisory
Zika is generally a mild disease, primarily transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her foetus or through sex.
Symptoms of Zika infection include rashes, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). However, most people infected with the Zika virus may not develop symptoms.
Residents, especially those residing in Zika and dengue cluster areas, are reminded to protect themselves and their loved ones by following the ‘S-A-W’ actions: Spray insecticide in dark corners around the house, Apply insect repellent regularly, and Wear long-sleeve tops and long pants.
