Morning sickness is a common pregnancy symptom that involves nausea and vomiting, often starting around the 12th week—but it can strike at any time of day. Triggered by hormonal changes, heightened senses, and natural protective instincts, its causes and severity vary from woman to woman. Types of morning sickness tea

There are a variety of types of teas you can choose from which have been scientifically proven to be beneficial in treating morning sickness. Here are a few that we recommend:

  • Ginger tea: Two compounds in ginger tea (gingerols and shogaols) are known to speed up the emptying of the stomach and reduce nausea.

  • Rooibos tea: It is caffeine-free, contains antioxidants, and is a high source of calcium. Furthermore, rooibos tea aids digestion and boosts iron absorption.

  • Raspberry leaf tea: Raspberry leaf is a good source of nutrients and contains antioxidants. Firstly, it helps with nausea and vomiting during the first trimester. Next, it is also recommended to consume this during the second trimester and third trimester of pregnancy, as it strengthens the uterus and reduces the likelihood of excessive bleeding after childbirth.
  • Chamomile tea: Some have commented that chamomile tea is more effective in reducing nausea and vomiting than ginger tea during pregnancy because it contains anti-inflammatory substances which reduces inflammation in the digestive tract.
  • Peppermint tea: Peppermint tea is a popular choice among pregnant women as it is caffeine-free. However, avoid drinking peppermint tea in large amounts, especially if you have heartburn or before the second trimester as it can lead to an upset stomach.

  • Green tea: Green tea contains L-Theanine which helps in anxiety, depression, and stress relief. It is generally best to drink green tea in adequate amounts as it contains caffeine.

  • Herbal teas: Overall, other herbal teas provide nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Morning sickness tea to avoid during pregnancy

Of course, there are also certain teas to avoid during your pregnancy—these include diet, cleansing, and detoxification teas. In general, avoid consuming too much morning sickness tea as it may interfere with the absorption of folic acid.

More importantly, avoid drinking too much black tea, green tea, and oolong tea since they contain higher amounts of caffeine and consuming more than 200mg of caffeine increases the risk of miscarriage.

If you do love these teas, you can soak the tea in a cup of water for 30 seconds and pour the first cup away in order to remove most of the caffeine present.

Treating Morning Sickness

In general, it is best to avoid consuming commercial or processed tea, which may contain chemicals which could be unsafe for your pregnancy. If the above selection of morning sickness teas are not to your taste, then you could also consider brewing your own homemade morning sickness tea or even consider making a lemonade!

There are also a myriad of other alternatives to treating morning sickness, such as aromatherapy, lozenges, crystallised ginger, and smelling lemon that you can try out to overcome the nauseous feeling at any time of the day.
