Period Sex Can Be Bloody Fabulous Too. Here's Why!

4 min read

Ewww…Yuck! When it comes to period sex, most of us are still bound by some preconceived notions and myths.

But did you know that having sex on your period isn’t really as gross and disgusting as it’s made out to be?

Here then, are 7 reasons why period sex can be so ‘bloody’ fabulous!

1. Not ALL that messy

Your pads and tampons may make you feel otherwise, but did you know that, the average volume of menstrual blood during a monthly period is just 35 ml? That’s just 2.4 tablespoons of menstrual fluid over a few days!

Of course, expect a bit of blood on your thighs, on your man’s penis, and a drop or 2 on the sheets. But there’s no way that you and your partner are going to be drenched in blood!

2. It’s just body fluids after all

It might smell a wee bit funny, but period blood is just brightly coloured body fluid after all. And a big part of being woman.

If you and your partner can quit being squeamish about it, why not go for it?

3. Helps ease your cramps and headache

period sex

Most women would be willing to give period sex a second thought after reading this one. 🙂

Apparently, having sex during your period can help with period cramps. This is because, when you have an orgasm, your body releases endorphins – feel good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine- that ease your period-related pains.

Guess what, it can also reduce your migraine! A study published in 2013 concluded that sexual activity may reduce migraine and cluster headache pain for some women.

It might even elevate your mood and help with feelings of sadness or depression!

4. Greater pleasure during sex

Most women actually feel more sexually aroused and sensitive to touch during ‘that’ time of the month. This is mainly because of the changes in hormone levels.

Women who have indulged in period sex also claim to have experienced greater passion and easier ‘n’ more powerful orgasms.

Also, the fact that it’s considered taboo makes it all the more exciting right? 😉

5. Shorter periods, anyone?

If you detest your periods, this one’s for you.

Period sex can actually help shorten your period by a day or 2. This is because, when you have an orgasm, your uterus contracts, and this makes the period-related lining and blood ooze out faster.

6. No need of lubricant

You are less likely to need lubricants if you engage in period sex, because menstrual discharge tends to provide enough lubrication.

7. Strengthens bond with your partner

You no longer have to keep your partner at arm’s distance come period time. 😉

Also, the fact that you can engage in period sex with your guy, makes a woman super comfortable with her partner and in effect, strengthens the bond, and feelings of love and intimacy between the couple.

Some precautions during period sex

Before you get into action though, here are some things you need to know about period sex:

1. Use condoms: It is recommended to use condoms and practise safe sex during your periods because the risk of getting or transmitting a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) like HIV is real. The virus may be present in menstrual blood.

Wearing a condom also helps, if your partner is terrified of blood on his penis. 😉

2. Risk of pregnancy: It’s a myth that it’s impossible to get pregnant if you have sex on your period.

While in most cases it is true, there are some exceptions.

If you have a shorter menstrual cycle (21-24 days), and you have unprotected sex towards the end of your period, ovulation will happen shortly after the period ends, releasing an egg. And we know that sperm can live inside a woman’s body for up to 3-5 days. Put that together and a pregnancy is very much possible!
