Parents Sue Tech Company for Causing Son’s Hearing Problems

Texas parents sue tech company for selling Bluetooth earbuds that caused their son’s recent hearing problems. They claimed that their child suffered from “permanent hearing loss” while he was using the products.

Carlos Gordoa and Ariani Reyes are the parents of the 12-year-old boy in this ongoing case. They demanded over $75,000 in damages, alleging that their son now suffers from hearing problems. According to them, it all started after an Amber Alert went off while he was using his earbuds.

It was in May 2020 when the incident happened. Back then, they said that their son was watching Netflix before the alert. They bought the Blue tooth earphones for him six months earlier.

In the lawsuit, they identify the 12-year-old kid as B.G.

“Without warning, at a volume that tore apart B.G.’s eardrum, damaged his cochlea, and caused significant injuries to B.G.’s hearing.”

In it, they stated the child experienced “bouts of dizziness, vertigo, and nausea.” Aside from that, he also displayed mental anguish and emotional trauma. They also stressed the kid’s need to use a hearing aid for the rest of his life.

“At 12 years old, B.G. suffered sudden and permanent hearing loss in his right ear,” stated in the lawsuit.

“B.G. has lost his ability to live a normal life, and he will continue to live a diminished life into the future, including a diminished earning capacity.”

Additionally, the lawsuit said that the family of the 12-year-old kid would, for the foreseeable future, have medical bills. The lawsuit said that the medical bills would be “a result of the defective Airpods.”

According to the suit, they argued that the devices are effective in design. However, they added that it also lacks adequate warnings for the risks of use.

Attorney Tej Paranjpe, one of the lawyers representing the family, said in a press release, “Had Apple designed the AirPods to self-adjust to safe levels or provided warnings about the volume increases associated with alerts, this boy would be living a normal life.”

On the other hand, Apple chose not to respond to the comment request of the media immediately.

5 Ways to Encourage Your Children to Use Gadgets Responsibly

Spending too much time on gadgets can have a negative impact on children. Kids who are glued to their digital devices can harm them.

Concerning this, adults themselves must know the responsible use of gadgets. Moreover, excessive use of devices affects both children and adults. Incorporating the responsible use of gadgets impacts the lives of the whole family. You must set an example and use your devices responsibly for your kids to see.

Technology is indeed essential in the daily lives of the new generations; it will remain so in the future. To fully maximise its use and potential, here are ways to teach your kids:

Urge Them to Follow a Schedule When Using Gadgets

Technology will always be a massive part of a person’s life. We cannot completely take it away from them. However, there are times when technology should be put down.

For instance, the whole family should keep their mobile phones off the table during lunch and dinner. During other family activities, such as watching a movie together, make sure that no one uses their smartphone.

Dissuade Your Children From Sleeping With Gadgets Nearby

Bedtime should be the time to rest, most especially for the kids. Kids should not be allowed to carry devices when going to bed. Studies also revealed that keeping gadgets near a sleeping person affects their sleep cycle. They will not be able to sleep properly; it could affect their mood, performance, and personal development.

Encourage Your Kids to Join Outdoor Sporting Activities

It is essential to encourage children to socialise and interact with others. They must be engaged in activities outside their home. If they enjoy doing so, they will no longer feel the need to rush and check their devices.

Teach Them About Protecting Their Online Privacy

Your children would not always want to share everything happening in their lives. Not wanting to share certain aspects of his private life is just normal.

However, like adults, kids are also entitled to privacy, and it is essential to respect it. Because of this, you much teach your kids the importance of online privacy while you respect theirs at home.

Be Their Role Model

Most of the time, children are not good listeners; they are better at imitating adults. Find time to turn off your screens and set a good example to your kids.
