The beloved Old Airport Road Food Centre is reopening on 1st October 2024 after completing four months of much-needed renovations. A favourite among locals and visitors alike, the centre has long been known for its variety of hawker delights. This latest facelift aims to provide a better dining experience for all.
What’s New at Old Airport Road Food Centre?
Renovations at Old Airport Road Food Centre include several updates to enhance comfort and convenience. These improvements were announced by Mountbatten MP Lim Biow Chuan on social media. He shared that the common areas have been repainted, and new tiles now grace the first floor.

One of the most noticeable changes will be the upgraded seating. All tables and stools, both indoors and outdoors, have been replaced. With this fresh look, patrons can now enjoy their meals in a more comfortable environment.
A Better Dining Experience
Apart from aesthetic updates, practical changes have also been made. New fans and lights have been installed to improve the overall atmosphere. The toilets have also been upgraded to ensure cleanliness and ease of use. Moreover, measures to keep pigeons at bay have been enhanced, including new bird spikes and netting.

This is part of an effort to attract more customers, as foot traffic at Old Airport Road Food Centre had slowed down in recent years. Many attribute the drop to the rise of air-conditioned dining spaces around the island, which offer a more comfortable setting. These renovations are designed to help the food centre compete with newer eateries.
Impact on Hawkers and Stall Owners
The renovation news is welcomed by many, especially stallholders. They hope that the improved facilities will help draw back regulars and even attract new visitors. Despite the extensive work done, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has confirmed that rental prices will not be affected. Additionally, stallholders were granted rental remissions for the period of closure.
This relief is crucial for small business owners who rely on their daily income. With the food centre reopening soon, there’s optimism that business will pick up again, particularly for the iconic stalls that have made Old Airport Road Food Centre a landmark for food lovers.
Why You Should Visit the Revamped Food Centre
The reopening of Old Airport Road Food Centre is not just about updated facilities; it’s a chance to reconnect with some of the best hawker fare in Singapore. From wanton noodles to char kway teow, there’s something for everyone.
If you’ve been a fan of the food centre in the past, now is the perfect time to revisit. The new upgrades ensure a more enjoyable dining experience while keeping the authenticity and charm of the hawker culture alive.
