In the heart of Singapore, where the aroma of sizzling woks and the chatter of satisfied diners intertwine, lies a culinary treasure trove — the Old Airport Road Food Centre.
This beloved hawker paradise, a testament to the island nation’s rich gastronomic heritage, will embark on a transformative journey.
From June 1 to September 30, 2024, the iconic food centre will close its doors, not to bid farewell, but to undergo a metamorphosis that will breathe new life into its storied halls.
Vacant Stalls and Potential Challenges
Currently, the Old Airport Road Food Centre, which boasts an impressive 168 stalls, has at least 10 stalls that are not in operation.
Although NEA planned to tenant these vacant stalls to stallholders selling halal food, the upcoming renovation might discourage potential bidders from setting up shop, knowing that the renovation will disrupt their business shortly after.
One stallholder who recently moved from Punggol to sell ayam penyet and mee soto expressed concerns about the renovation’s timing, as it could hinder the acquisition of regular customers.
Other stallholders echoed this sentiment, noting that new stalls typically require between six months and a year to establish a loyal following.

Despite the temporary inconvenience, some stallholders are looking forward to the sprucing up of the hawker centre.
Over time, the number of diners has fallen in the evenings, likely due to the increasing availability of dining-out and air-conditioned options in Singapore.
The refurbished premises are expected to entice patrons and breathe new life into this cherished food hub.
Support for Stallholders During Renovation
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has announced that rental remission will be granted to stallholders for the duration of the renovation, as they will be unable to continue operating their stalls due to the closure of the hawker centre and market.
Additionally, NEA is offering temporary stalls to stallholders who wish to continue their business at other hawker centres or markets during the renovation period, subject to stall availability.
Rest assured, there will be no increase in stall rentals due to the works, as confirmed by NEA.
