New year, new you. Lose the old weight!

3 Jan, 2012

Getting in shape and shedding those extra pounds is just as hard as you make it out to be—as the saying goes: "It’s all in the mind" and it really is! Here are some pointers to help you stick with the New Year's resolution…
1. Do not start by thinking that you are the biggest there

1. Do not start by thinking that you are the biggest there

That thought can crush your confidence before you even start. It is highly likely that you are not the largest, most out of shape one around—trust us. Do you look around when you work out? Or are you focusing on your work out?

We tend to do more focusing than checking other ladies out—unless you’re talking about that fine specimen with a six-pack pumping and a five o’clock shadow pumping iron in the corner. People should be happy for you that you’re doing something to get healthier! Remember most people are too focused on what they’re doing than what you’re doing.
2. Make time and not excuses

2. Make time and not excuses

Yes, we know that your plate is full and so are ours. The time that you take to come up with excuses can be used to do several sit ups or crunches. Get into an exercise routine even with your work, your kids and your spouse in the mix.

How? Get up earlier or go later. If that does not work out for you, then source a gym that has childcare or activities for your children so they will be taken off your hands while you sweat it out. It’s ok that your kids eat a non-home-cooked meal (as long as it’s healthy and nutritious!) if you can squeeze in your workout.
3. Weights and cardio work together

3. Weights and cardio work together

Everybody knows that cardio is essential for a strong heart, to burn those stubborn spots and your overall stamina. Did you know though, that if you want to tone up, get fit and lose weight then you have to get weight training in the picture too.

Your body will burn more calories even when you are idle if you have added muscle mass. Guess what? Your body will look and function better even if you do not lose a pound on the scales. Muscle is heavier than fat—remember that!
4. Get yourself a hot personal trainer

4. Get yourself a hot personal trainer

Here’s your chance to stop staring at the trainer’s hot bulging muscles and start training some up that you can call your own. Check out the packages at your local gym, some offer deals in which you and a few gal pals can share a session for a cheaper rate. Trainers can help you achieve your goals the right and most effective way.

Plus, we’re sure you will find yourself feeling a little more motivated to make those gym appointments if your eyes know they’re in for a treat!
5. Try an app or a DVD workout

5. Try an app or a DVD workout

OK, if you really don’t have the time to get out of the house and into the gym then this tip is for you. There are plenty of workout videos with everything from yoga to Latin dance. You can do the sun salutations or shimmy your way towards a fitter body—all in the comfort of your own home.

As for apps, there are all sorts of apps that can help you monitor your progress or motivate you during a down day. They even allow you to set reminders, so you won’t be tempted to ‘forget’.
6. Set goals and reward yourself

6. Set goals and reward yourself

Be fair to yourself. Do not set unachievable goals such as "losing 25 pounds in a week". Also, please do not reward yourself with three slices of macadamia caramel cheesecake after you lose ¼ of a pound.

Rewarding yourself can help you reinforce your goals – if they are done properly. Save the cake for your cheat days and watch your diet otherwise. We promise it will feel more rewarding.
7. Make it fun and fresh

7. Make it fun and fresh

When something becomes routine, the excitement fizzles and the motivation vanishes. Keep it fresh by keeping things new—take a brand new class, subscribe to a fitness magazine, download new songs for your morning jog, just do something different.

Here’s your chance to experiment. Most importantly, make it fun or the whole workout will be nothing but a drag. Good luck!
