Check Out Fort Canning Park’s History, Artefacts, and Sights

Formerly the site of 14th-century palaces and later the Far East Command Centre headquarters, Fort Canning Park is steeped in history.

History buffs will be delighted by the park’s historical artefacts and educational sights.

Here are some must-visit spots.

  • Fort Gate. Explore the remains of the fortress that once protected Singapore from sea-based attacks and served as a refuge for the European population. It’s a testament to the city’s rich history.

  • Gothic Gates. Step through the archway marked with the letters “IHS” and enter Fort Canning Green. The gates’ design and symbolism make for an intriguing sight and a perfect photo opportunity.

  • Maritime Corner@Fort Canning. Discover Singapore’s maritime evolution at this focal point, which features the Fort Canning Lighthouse—an impressive structure that showcases the city’s seafaring heritage.

  • 9-Pound Cannon. Encounter a 19th-century cannon that was fired daily to announce the hour and warn about town fires. Adjacent to the cannon, the South Battery offers insights into Singapore’s defence system.

  • Keramat Iskandar Shah. Visit the purported resting place of Singapore’s last king. This keramat, or sacred place, is a testament to the city’s ancient inhabitants and holds cultural significance.

Fort Canning guides and apps

For an immersive experience, download the BalikSG Augmented Reality (AR) app before your visit.

The app features the Fort Canning Trail, allowing you to explore the park’s historical characters, stories, and events through AR technology.

You can also follow NParks’ DIY Ancient History walking trail for a step back into the past.

Visit the Nine Gardens

Nature enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise at Fort Canning Park. The park features nine historical gardens, each with its own unique charm. Inspired by historical texts, these gardens offer a glimpse into Singapore’s past.

Here’s what to expect.

  • Spice Garden. Wander through Sir Stamford Raffles’ former spice plantation, featuring various spice plants and a self-guided walk to enhance your botanical knowledge.

  • Artisan’s Garden. Immerse yourself in the history of craftsmen who served the royal house. Participate in archaeology workshops and enjoy a shaded picnic amidst the exhibits.

  • Farquhar Garden. Admire the wildlife drawings commissioned by Major-General William Farquhar and interact with them using the BalikSG AR app.

  • Sang Nila Utama Garden. Experience the ambience of ancient palaces with symmetrical layouts, Javanese gates, and significant flora from the Javanese culture.

  • Raffles Garden. Delve into the botanical and wildlife studies of Sir Stamford Raffles through a garden filled with the flora and fauna he explored.

  • First Botanic Garden. Explore Singapore’s first botanical and experimental garden, featuring diverse tree species introduced during the colonial era.
