Maths enrichment for primary schoolers

6 Jun, 2014

The enrichment market in Singapore is a thriving one, with a multitude of different operators offering a range of methods and practices to equip your child with the necessary skills to tackle the MOE syllabus like a champ.

But how do you sift through the market and find the best maths enrichment class for your child?

For starters, we've done the hard work for you by listing down some of the popular maths enrichment courses available in Singapore that cater especially to primary school students.

Each enrichment centre has its own selling points that can benefit your child. However, some of the teaching styles provided for the courses might not fit your child's learning style.

Thus, we recommend that you go out and try out a few, especially since most of the programmes listed here offer trial sessions.

Seriously Addictive Mathematics (S.A.M)

Seriously Addictive Mathematics (S.A.M)

The founder of Seriously Addictive Mathematics (S.A.M) has designed a unique maths programme based on the Singapore Maths curriculum.

With over 30,000 pages of ‘step up’ worksheets and a team of qualified trainers, the math programme at S.A.M is, by far, one of the most comprehensive programmes for Singapore Maths. It was even awarded The Best Mathematics Programme by Parents World magazine.

At S.A.M, kids learn through the centre’s 2 learning pillars: The Worksheet Experience and The Classroom Experience.

The Worksheet Experience instills self-discipline and independent learning through a designated study time at home. The workload and level of difficulty are carefully assigned to make sure that the learning process is kept challenging and fun for every student.

Under the Classroom Experience, certified S.A.M trainers interact with students through dialogue, asking questions, props, games and words of encouragement. During the Classroom Experience, trainers will also assess how each student is coping with the worksheets and determine the rate of progress.

S.A.M trainers use "A Holistic Approach to Learning Mathematics." Through this method, the focus is on equipping students with the following skills:

Critical Thinking Heuristics Logical Reasoning Metacognitive Understanding Modelling Techniques Situational Word Problems

The Learning Lab

The Learning Lab

The Learning Lab is known for their exclusivity and their advanced curriculum. They take pride in providing their students with the opportunity to experience the features of the Gifted Education Programme for the primary level and the Integrated Programme for the secondary level.

Feedback from parents has been positive, yet the most common complaint is their long waiting lists, which can turn off parents who can't afford to wait for 6 months for a place for their child.

The Learning Lab is located at:

33 Rochester Drive

Rochester Mall Level 2 138638

Kumon

Kumon

Kumon is a maths program intended to supplement rather than replace school lessons. Students don't necessarily work together as a class, but they progress through the program at their own pace, moving forward when they've mastered the previous concept.

The Kumon method remains popular with the primary school crowd. However, older children may get bored of the constant repetition and daily homework that comes with Kumon classes.

MPM Math

MPM Math

This maths enrichment class sets itself apart by being true to the local primary school syllabus, which is advantageous for students who might get confused with which methods to apply in school.

Its main aim is to cultivate and improve independent problem-solving skills in your children.

The Sakamoto Method

The Sakamoto Method

The Sakamoto Method originated from Japan and is fast becoming the enrichment choice for many parents with school-going children. What sets them apart is their emphasis on solving word problems for primary school mathematics.

The class sizes are small and the worksheets provided by the centre focus on difficult problem sums that many students struggle with.

The Number Links Centre

The Number Links Centre

The Number Links Centre for Mathematics prides itself in providing their students with a good foundation in basic mathematics concepts.

The classes are complementary to the MOE syllabus and offer additional training in critical thinking.
