The festival of lights, Deepavali, is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. It is the time when thousands of Hindu families across the globe decorate their homes with lights, exchange gifts, and offer prayers to deities such as Goddess Lakshmi.

This year the festival is being celebrated on November 4 (Thursday) and for some it may well extend into a long weekend.

The Deepavali celebrations have turned hybrid this year in view of the restrictions amid COVID-19. So Deepavali Singapore 2021 will see a lineup of specially curated events, both on-ground and virtual. 

Here are some events you can look forward to on the occasion of the Festival of Lights. 

Deepavali 2021 Online Event

Don’t miss out on the Deepavali mega online event on November 4, 2021. It will feature a marathon of dance, drama, songs, and variety shows that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. 

From food trails, masterclasses, celebrities and fun competitions, treasure hunts, there is something for everyone. 

You can also submit your entry for the Deepavali TikTok challenge and to win $400 worth of prizes. 

Attend Special Indian Cooking Class At The Commune

Indian festivals are about eating together and spending time with loved ones. On the occasion of Deepavali in Singapore this year, there is a special Indian cooking class being organised at the Commune Kitchen.

Wear your traditional Indian outfit and get ready to soak in the festive fervour.

Menu:

  • Potato Samosas
  • Dal Tadka
  • Whole-wheat Chapatis
  • Balti Chicken Masala

Cost: SGD130 including lunch. Dessert is on the house (it is advised to also check with the Commune Kitchen on the same).

If you are in Chinatown, stop by Singapore’s biggest and one of the oldest temples, Sri Mariamman on South Bridge Road. The beautiful temple is famous for its breathtaking painted ceilings. 

You can head to Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple on Ceylon Road if you are in the East. This 120-year-old temple has a unique musical pillar that produces different notes when tapped.

Deepavali Celebrations At The Indian Heritage Centre

The Indian Heritage Centre will give you a chance to explore several offline and online activities set in the theme of “Welcoming Light.” When you enter the Indian Heritage Centre, you will be greeted by the beautifully decorated stairway.

You can also check out the culinary masterclasses, rangoli and kolam workshops, TikTok challenges, informative displays and much more while you are here.
