Abortion is available on request during the first 24 weeks of gestation (first six months) unless the procedure is necessary to save the life or to prevent permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman.

In 2007, The Singapore Health Ministry recorded 11,933 abortions.

Eligibility for Abortion

Abortion is restricted to citizens of Singapore, wives of Singapore citizens and women that have resided in Singapore for a minimum duration of four months.

According to the Singapore Abortion Act law there is no defined age limit for the abortion procedure, nor is there a legal requirement for parental consent for minors under the age of 21. In other words just about anyone may request for an abortion, as long as they are of sound mind and body and understand the risks and details of the procedure.

Pre-Abortion

The Singapore Abortion Law act also requires that the woman undergoes brief counselling by a qualified abortion counsellor at any accredited abortion clinic, and watch a video on the subject.

For girls under the age of 16, they have to undergo mandatory counseling at the Health Promotion Board.

There is also a mandatory waiting period of 48 hours after the counselling before the procedure can be done. So that means you will have to visit your doctor twice. Once for the scan to confirm the pregnancy and counselling, and the second visit, two days later, to undergo the termination.

The Cost

The cost of abortion and consultation ranges from S$400 to S$2,000, depending on the type of theatre employed, the depth of anaesthesia applied and in the package inclusions.

What Happens During an Abortion

There are two types of abortion, abortion through syringe, and vacuum aspiration. Both types take about five minutes and you will need to fast for six hours before your abortion. That means no water as well.

Other Options in Singapore

Abortion is not the only option of “getting rid” of a pregnancy. There are various hotlines, such as Beyond Social Services that you can call to talk about the other options.

  2. alphonse says:

Shanu, dont go for the lowest cost. Go for the one that seems the most reputable. Speak to the doctor, get the guy to help you as well. You might not want your parents to know but you will need someone to help and support you as well. Dont be alone. Good luck.

I advice going down to see your private gp first. He can advice you on the next step.

There is no requirement to tell your parents.

Be safe and please use a condom next time.

Make sure your BF knows that you are going for an abortion. Many men out there just don’t care and are not responsible at all. Worst, they be even deny that the baby is theirs and might ask you for some medical reports to ‘prove’….. so make sure he goes with you and know what you are going through physically and emotionally. Believe me, I went through the abortion all alone thinking to make things easiler for him since he is married but when I told him later, he did not believe me. This hurts me alot even to this day. Is just so mean of him to say that the baby is not his and wanted some reports.

    take care, girl.

Hi. I’ve call up 2 government hospital and i was being told that for minors under 16, they need parental consent for abortion? Is it a need or not for parents’ consent for minors under 16?

oh dear, 4.5 months is quite an advanced stage…
Advanced stage baby has attached firmly to your uterus – which mean you might lost tons of blood that you’re are risking your life. Your uterus might be destroyed leaving you no chance to be a mother in the future.

Also, your baby’s feeling of pain has fully developed, killing her/him is really sad and cruel.

Sadly, We all have to bear consequences of our doing, that’s how we grow to be more mature as a person. Would you be able to take up the courage to talk to your parents, all parents love their kids tremendously despite whatever you’ve done. Babies are innocent. don’t kill them.

Maybe you can consider giving up for adoption – there’re thousands of couples who REALLY REALLY want to have their own children but they can’t conceived. Bless them, give your baby a chance to live… This is the best gift for them… decide wisely before the regret and guilt haunt you forever.

Wow, how many lies can you pack into one comment?

–Having an abortion will not kill you. The most risky thing in the procedure will be the anesthia, which puts you at the same risk for any other procedure you have done while receiving anesthia. The actual procedure is incredibly safe. You have a better chance of death by lightening strike than you do from having an abortion.

–Having an abortion has no effect on your future fertility.

–There is NO STUDY that has proved anything regarding what babies feel and when. There is no way to conduct such a study.

How dare you lie and spread fear. I’m betting you’re a so-called Christian and you think you’re doing something good. However, you’re breaking commandments left and right there.

Google guttmacher study for reliable data about abortion provided by a real, reliable source. Everything I have said can be verified by reliable medical study. Nothing the previous commenter has said can be.

My dear C, Apparently I happened to have gone thru D&C myself. And because of introverted uterus(which30%women has), i had an incomplete abortion which led to infection, heavy bleeding that almost took my life away.

between 13 to 24 weeks after LMP abortion is called “Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)”
At this point in pregnancy, the fetus is too large to be broken up by suction alone and will not pass through the suction tubing. In this procedure, the cervix must be opened wider than in a first trimester abortion. This is done by inserting numerous thin rods made of seaweed a day or two before the abortion. Once the cervix is stretched open the doctor pulls out the fetal parts with forceps. The fetus’ skull is crushed to ease removal. A sharp tool (called a curette) is also used to scrape out the contents of the uterus, removing any remaining tissue.

Are there any living being with nerve don’t feel pain? Pain can be detected when nociceptors (pain receptors) discharge electrical impulses to the spinal cord and brain. These fire impulses outward, telling the muscles and body to react. These can be measured. Mountcastle, Medical Physiology, St. Louis: C.V. Mosby, pp. 391-427 “Lip tactile response may be evoked by the end of the 7th week. At 11 weeks, the face and all parts of the upper and lower extremities are sensitive to touch. By 13 1/2 to 14 weeks, the entire body surface, except for the back and the top of the head, are sensitive to pain.” S. Reinis & J. Goldman, The Development of the Brain C. Thomas Pub., 1980
National Geographic did a 40 episodes daily basis life in the womb wt 3D video show how sensitive as fetus respond to stimulation in all of the main senses, sound, taste or smell, touch and vision.

Also, is Anesthesia the only complication??
Serious complications occurs in 1 out of every 50 later abortions. Complications include:
          * Heavy Bleeding – Some bleeding after abortion is normal. However, if the cervix is torn or the uterus is punctured, there is a risk of severe bleeding known as hemorrhaging. When this happens, a blood transfusion may be required. Severe bleeding is also a risk with the use of RU486. One in 100 women who use RU486 require surgery to stop the bleeding.

          * Infection – Infection can develop from the insertion of medical instruments into the uterus, or from fetal parts that are mistakenly left inside (known as an incomplete abortion). A pelvic infection may lead to persistent fever over several days and extended hospitalization. It can also cause scarring of the pelvic organs.

          * Incomplete Abortion – Some fetal parts may be mistakenly left inside after the abortion. Bleeding and infection may result.

          * Sepsis – A number of RU486 or mifepristone users have died as a result of sepsis (total body infection).

          * Anesthesia – Complications from general anesthesia used during abortion surgery may result in convulsions, heart attack, and in extreme cases, death. It also increases the risk of other serious complications by two and a half times.

          * Damage to the Cervix – The cervix may be cut, torn, or damaged by abortion instruments. This can cause excessive bleeding that requires surgical repair.

          * Scarring of the Uterine Lining – Suction tubing, curettes, and other abortion instruments may cause permanent scarring of the uterine lining.

          * Perforation of the Uterus – The uterus may be punctured or torn by abortion instruments. The risk of this complication increases with the length of the pregnancy. If this occurs, major surgery may be required, including removal of the uterus (known as a hysterectomy).

          * Damage to Internal Organs – When the uterus is punctured or torn, there is also a risk that damage will occur to nearby organs such as the bowel and bladder.

          * Death – In extreme cases, other physical complications from abortion including excessive bleeding, infection, organ damage from a perforated uterus, and adverse reactions to anesthesia may lead to death. This complication is rare, but is real.

          • c says:

The risk of everything you discuss from sepsis to death is a super remote possibility. When you misrespresent the statistical probability of an event, that’s called a lie. You’re a liar.

0.3% of all abortion patients have a complication that requires a hospitalization.

The risk of death associated with abortion increases with the length of pregnancy, from one death for every one million abortions at or before eight weeks to one per 29,000 at 16–20 weeks—and one per 11,000 at 21 or more weeks.

The risk of death every single time you get into a car? 1 in 6,000.

          Dear C,

wow, what a strong language you use on others as if you’ve never lied before. Anyway, I wrote 1 out of 50 “LATER” abortion has serious complications. LATER abortion means 16 weeks and above. Your stat 0.3% is for “ALL” abortion. Early abortion has lower complication, I agree. But I’m writing in respond to Yam’s situation(by now should be 5 mth).

Anyway, if it makes you feel better by scolding ppl & calling them names here to justify your action, I’m fine wt it. I’m here to voice/genuine concern from my perspective/experience from medical point of view, not to argue wt you.
          Take care

I went through this abortion thing myself and till today, 12 years later, I am still not able to forget the whole procedure, about how cold and scary when I walked into the OT… I am never able to forgive myself for what has happened. I regretted my decision then.

So, wWhoever you are out there, please.. please.. put abortion as your last-last-last option or don’t even consider about doing it at all..

  10. helpful says:

I accompanied a friend for abortion, and this is my recommendation:

    1) Don’t go to hospital, go to private doctor, it’s more personal and not as over whelming
    2) Charges are around $160 for consultation and ultrasound and bout $400 for the procedure. So have about $600 ready.
    3) Go with a friend you trust and who can support you. Have your friend wait for you after the procedure with a bottle of water
    4) The entire process is about 5 minutes and feels like a tummy ache. You might have to use the loo after the process.
    5) Good luck and use this as a lesson to learn about safe sex!

    • Confused says:

      Hi helpful,

im just wondering.. Do we need parental consent when we go to private hospitals? N do you mind telling if this is recent? Because if its ages ago, maybe the rules have changes and that now there is a need for parental concern..
      thanks!

    • curios says:

hey may i know where’s the place?

I’m 30 this year and am coming to my 11th week of pregnancy. When i announced pregnancy to my spouse, the first response was abortion. It also led to issues of financial difficulties of bringing up the child as he was only just employed. Also other difficulties i faced were my father being in a bad health condition and pregnancy at this stage, as mentioned by my mother, could be led to rumours. My FIL also brought in issues of having a baby in this year will lead my MIL to bad health. I am in a dilemma now and it’s a very hurtful thing to think of abortion. I do not know what I can do. Am I really ready for it?

  12. Jessy says:

    dear Frip,

Would you consider giving baby up for adoption?. As far as I know, if you opted for adoption now, the couple who chose the baby wld bear gynea cost -all the way to delivery on top of the adoption sum, I think. A good friend of mine adopted 2 girls. They are 17&12 now, wonderful wonderful kids. You can choosing the adopter. Good to look out for those wt good value.

  13. r says:

The article did not mention that after two weeks you need to have a follow up check up at the clinic again.

Also, you don’t have to watch the abortion video. You can close your eyes….

    • Su says:

frip, you musn’t let others influence your decision.

If you don’t watch the abortion video, it means that you are making a decision without knowing the facts. Women should really be aware of what the full process is before making a major decision like this.

Look at photos of a 6 week foetus, a 12 week foetus, a 20 week foetus and actually understand what you are aborting.

A foetus at 6 weeks already has a heartbeat. A 20 week foetus is not a lump of cells, but a baby with fingers and toes.
