Is Your Height Ideal? Here's How to Calculate It!

To determine your ideal height, parents need to know how to measure height. There's also the best time to measure height.

Some people are very concerned about their height. This is because height is one of the first things others notice. Speaking of height, how do you measure your ideal height? Read the explanation in this article, Parents !

Factors Affecting Height

There are many factors that influence a person’s height, including:

  • Genetic. 80% of a person’s height is influenced by genetic or hereditary factors.
  • Birth weight. A person’s birth weight is a combination of many factors, including genetics and nutrition in the womb. It is also a significant predictor of height.
  • Premature birth. Premature babies tend to grow into shorter adults.
  • Hormones. Hormones affect human growth, especially during puberty. Hormonal imbalances can cause people to be unusually tall or short.
  • Nutrition. Nutrition is an important factor in growth. People who are malnourished may not grow tall, especially those who don’t get enough calcium, vitamin D, or other essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Location and geographic location. Location influences exposure to natural sunlight, which is a source of vitamin D. Location can also affect a person’s access to healthy food, water, and healthcare.
  • Stunted growth. Factors that inhibit growth can cause people to grow shorter than they should. These factors include eating disorders , serious illnesses, and exposure to certain medications.

One way to find out your ideal heightParentsis to compare it with body weight.

The comparison of height and weight is used to determine body mass index (BMI).

BMI can be found by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters squared). For example, if you weigh 50 kg and are 160 cm (1.60 meters) tall, your BMI is calculated as: 50 / (1.60 x 1.60) = 19.53 kg/m².

A healthy BMI ranges from 18.5 to 22.9. A BMI between 23 and 24.9 indicates overweight, while a BMI above 25 indicates obesity. A BMI below 18.5 is a sign of underweight.

BMI is a number used to determine a person’s weight and height proportionally.

To have a healthy BMI, you should adjust the ratio of your height to weight between 18.5 to 22.9 kg/m².

Average Human Height

Average human height can vary based on several factors. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, a person’s height is influenced by:

  • Genetics
  • Nutrition
  • Access to medical care
  • Diseases that are owned
  • Income
  • Education
  • Work
  • Ethnicity.

As a result, people living in wealthier countries with better access to food, water, and health care often have a taller average height.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2017, the average height for adults over the age of 20 was:

  • Male 175.26 cm
  • Female 162.56 cm.

After knowing the ideal height based on body weight , here are some steps to measure your own height:

  • Before measuring height, remove shoes, hats, and other head coverings. These items can make the measurement inaccurate.
  • Find a flat, straight object such as a book, ruler, or box.
  • Place the object above the head.
  • Stand with your feet together facing the wall.
  • Make sure your back is flat against the wall surface.
  • Use a pencil or other writing instrument to mark the wall parallel to the bottom of the object touching the top of the head.
  • After determining the point, measure the distance of that point from the floor. The distance of that point from the floor is your height.

Best Time to Measure Height

A person’s height changes throughout the day. A person is at their maximum height when they wake up in the morning.

However, to ensure your actual height, you should consistently take measurements using the same tool every day.
