Vastu tips to help you decorate your kids' room

Vastu tips to help you decorate your kids' room

Vastu shastra is an ancient architectural science of India. Here are some vastu tips to help you decorate your kid's room.

Vastu shastra is an ancient architectural science of India. Simply put, vastu tips include art and science to design houses, offices, temples, so that they emanate good energy.

Indian Kings and Moghul Emperors used Vastu when they built their palaces, and courtyards.

Like Feng Shui, Vastu is based on an octagon with the four directions being the anchors. Hindus believe that gods live in each of the quarters of the hous, and govern the rooms, possessions, and activities in these locations. According to Vastu, the nature’s five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) also has an impact on your surroundings.

Vastu tips to help you redesign your kid’s favourite room

Here are some simple Vastu tips for your children’s room:

1. Location and structure of bedroom (Bhoomi)

Vayu, the god of wind and air, is situated in the Northwest corner. Vayu promotes serenity, peace and calm. Hence, the best direction for your child’s bedroom is in the Northwest side of the house. Your kids should never sleep in the South or Southwest direction.

The door of the bathroom should not be exactly opposite to the bed. Similar to Feng Shui, in Vastu, the bathroom is believed to drain energy.

The bedroom should be in a square or rectangular shape. The square/rectangle represents all four directions and provides a balance of the five elements and three gunas (types of energy).

It is also a strong, stable shape that offers protection from the outside elements. If your child’s bedroom is oddly shaped, you can use a room divider to help it maintain a more rectangular shape.

2. Decor (Yaana)

The colour green is the most recommended for a child’s room as it stimulates the brain yet offers a calming effect.

Blue is a good colour for children who are hyperactive and aggressive in temperament. Avoid using dark or fiery colours in your kid’s room.

Avoid hanging pictures that depict violence or sorrow. Apart from Vastu, this idea has a psychological perspective as well.

Once we hang a picture in our home and we happen to see it daily, it leaves an impression on the mind. Therefore it is always preferable to use images that are positive and relate to joy and happiness.

3. Furniture (Sayana)

The furniture in the room should be placed a few inches away from the walls, so as not to obstruct the flow of positive energy.

Beds should be made of solid wood and it is best to avoid a box bed.

The study table, should be placed so as to ensure that the child faces east or north-east while studying. Facing east ensures enhanced concentration.

A light in the southeast corner of the bedroom brings positive energy and good health.

Always ensure that the center of the room is free of furniture and clutter, as it will radiate positive energy outward into the room.

As a general rule of Vastu, there must not be any mirror opposite to the bed in a bedroom. A television screen is also considered as a mirror when switched off, as such it is better to remove Tv’s/computers from the room.

But if necessary place the TV in the north-west of the room and the computer in the south-east corner of the room.

4. Clear clutter in the room

Minimise clutter and dust in your kid’s room. Dust and clutter represent negativity, so once in a month, take an inventory of your household goods and dispose off any clutter.

Fresh air is extremely important. Having the window open, even a quarter of an inch, will help eliminate toxins that can build up and circulate in the air.
