Adults, by default, carry about them the responsibility to be good examples to children. They need not be paragons of virtue, but they do need to show a good moral standard for the impressionable minds to look up to.
But what happens when adults themselves are the ones who encourage terrible behaviour?
It results in a beer-chugging competition between seven-year-old boys—or at least that was what happened in the Binh Puhoc province in Vietnam, as shown in a video that has since gone viral.
The video features a group of men at a roadside bar hosting what appears to be a drinking competition.
In this instance however, it isn’t the men that are imbibing, but a pair of boys.
According to a report by The Daily Mail, the men around them were betting on the boys, but the prize remains unclear.
“One boy in a green and white T-shirt seems close to passing out as he wins the challenge while the other is encouraged to finish his beer, even though he has lost the contest.
“At one point, a man’s voice can he heard talking about ‘my nephew’ before ordering the youngster to carry on drinking.”
A man could be heard in the video calling for a stop to the competition, but he is shouted down.
The two boys carry on amid cheers and jeers.
After being posted online, it has gathered a slew of angry comments from users. One user called the adult men “a disaster for the future” and “destructive to a generation.”
Meanwhile, another user named Le Lien commented, “In foreign countries, you are punished by law for under-age drinking. ‘Those who sell alcoholic drinks to people under 21 are also criminalized.”
