Tutor Receives Jail Sentence for Assaulting Students
A 54-year-old tutor in Singapore received a 45-year jail sentence for assaulting his students. He committed the heinous crimes after he advertised himself as a tutor for children with needs.
The man lied to the parents of his students and said he qualified as an educational therapist. Because of that, he was handed down the prison term, the longest imposed in the country for a sexual offence.
Prosecutors who handled the case considered the case as one of the worst sexual assault incidents against pre-pubescent children. The man was found guilty of sexually abusing a total of 8 victims over a period of 16 years from 2002 to 2018.

He pleaded guilty to six charges of aggravated rape against three victims. Two girls were only 5 years old when they were raped, while the third was 8 years old. The man recorded videos of his numerous assaults. The clips usually lasted up to 17 minutes.
During sentencing, the court considered filing 80 charges against him. The mentioned offences highlighted assaulting the 8 students he was hired to tutor. Concerning this, the victims were aged between five to 13 years old. A gag order protects the man’s identity as he was in a relationship with the mother of one of the victims.
The offences came to light after the tutor sold his laptop in June 2018. The buyer found obscene files in the device and decided to report it to the police. During the sentencing, High Court Judge Ang Cheng Hock stated:
“The exceptionally sickening sexual abuse perpetrated by the accused against multiple children of such a young age warrants a harsh sentence.”
The judge also said that the lengthy sentence was a solid message to like-minded offenders. It is reflecting society’s condemnation of the man’s depraved acts against children who trust him. Both the children and their parents put their trust in the man as a tutor and father figure.
Additionally, as per the court’s decision, he will be out of prison when he is already 80 years of age. It will happen only if he receives the usual one-third remission for good behaviour. The offender told the court in Mandarin:
“I’m very remorseful for the wrong I have done; it will haunt me for my entire life. I would like to sincerely apologise to the people I have hurt, and I hope they can forgive me.”
16-Year Timeline of Tutor Assaulting His Students
The below timeline narrates the different clips that the suspect saved on his laptop. The exact series of videos were categorised following the years he tutored the victims.
2022 – 2004
The man sexually assaulted one of his victims when she was 5 years old. He also attempted and committed the act again on other 15 occasions. In addition, he also forced the victim to engage in other sexual acts while he recorded them.
2002 – 2003
The offender rubbed himself against one of his students during 3 different sessions. At that time, the victim was around 7-8 years old.
2004
He rubbed himself against his victim on four separate occasions. She was about six to seven years old at that time.
2006 – 2007
The offender took nude photos of his student while she was between the ages of 5-6 years old. In addition, the man was sexually abusing the victim on four occasions while he was filming the act.

2009 – 2010
The man recorded videos and took nude pictures of one of his students. She was about 10 years old then. Furthermore, the offender proceeded with his usual heinous acts of touching and rubbing himself.
2010
The offender took nude photos of another student. This time, it was a young 13-year-old boy who was the sibling of a different victim.
2014 – 2015
The man assaulted and took more nude photos of his student 4 different times. This victim was about seven to eight years old back then.
2016 – 2018
In this period, the offender took 200 obscene photos of a female student. She was between 6-9 years old at that time. The man also recorded his two failed attempts of sexual assault against this victim.
Unfortunately, he still filmed the 3 times he succeeded in committing the heinous act. He also molested her on 4 different occasions.
What Counts as Sexual Assault?
Sexual assault occurs when someone sexually touches another person without their consent. It is also when someone makes another person take part in sexual activity without the other’s permission. Unwanted kissing and sexual touching also fall under this category of assault.

Sexual assault could never be the victim’s fault. It will never be because of what they were wearing, how they were behaving, or their sexual history.
Sexual assault can include:
- Any penetration without consent (e.g. vaginal, oral or anal), using any part of the body (penis, fingers) or object.
- Any unwanted touching, kissing, groping, etc.
- Unwanted sexual requests, messages or gestures, including electronically, in the workplace or elsewhere.
- Being forced to watch pornographic content.
- Unwanted taking or sharing of nude or intimate photographs or videos (e.g. upskirting, hidden cameras)
