Heartbreaking: Indian toddler found breastfeeding from dead mum

Heartbreaking: Indian toddler found breastfeeding from dead mum

Reports have surfaced of this toddler trying to seek nourishment and comfort in his mum's arms — not understanding her death.

In a heartbreaking moment, this little boy crawled into his mum’s embrace and began breastfeeding from dead mum — not knowing she had passed away.

Railway track workers spotted a woman lying near the tracks, a child at her breast, in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, central India. Upon reaching the scene, they found that the mother was dead, her 17-month-old crying beside her.

A tearful crowd soon formed around this heartrending tableau of a mum giving nourishment to her son even after death. Nand Ram, head office of the Government Railway Police, described the incident in the Mirror UK. “The toddler was crying for his mother and on receiving no response from her, he held her and started drinking milk from her.”

He added, “We were shocked to see it, it was very sad… This was something we have never seen before. It was quite emotional for us all.”

Tragic accident

Police have not yet determined the cause of death, but it is speculated that the mother was involved in an accident. She was found bleeding from her nose and ears.

Miraculously, her little toddler escaped without a scratch. He was swiftly taken for a check-up at the district hospital, where doctors determined that he was suffering only from a cold. A nurse at the hospital assured, “He has no other complications and we’ll make sure he’s taken care of.”

Police have also not managed to locate the mum’s home address and family members. Until they are tracked down, her son will be taken good care of in an orphanage.

All our best wishes go out to this little boy and the bereaved family. We are sure that this mum would have drawn comfort from the notion that her last act was to breastfeed her precious son. We hope this poor child will soon be delivered into the loving hands of his dad and family!
