Tracing the Remarkable Journey
At the heart of the exhibition lies the story of Lee Kuan Yew’s remarkable transformation – from a young boy with dreams and aspirations to the visionary leader who steered Singapore to global prominence.
This exhibition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mr. Lee’s birth, takes a deep dive into his formative years, challenges, and monumental accomplishments. Tracing his journey from childhood to statesmanship, the exhibition provides an illuminating insight into the values he upheld and his enduring legacy.
Through immersive displays and interactive installations, children are invited to connect with the Singaporean story on a more personal level, fostering a sense of pride and appreciation for the nation’s progress.
Rediscovering the Personal Lee Kuan Yew
While Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping Singapore, the exhibition delves beyond his political persona to showcase his relatable side. The younger Mr. Lee grew up in the 1920s, enjoying simple childhood pleasures such as playing gasing (top-spinning), marbles, and even engaging in the timeless pursuit of keeping fighting fish.
This charming depiction of his youth is a reminder that even great leaders had humble beginnings and relatable childhood experiences. By doing so, the exhibition inspires young visitors to dream big and believe their aspirations can contribute to positive change within their communities and nation.
A Glimpse Into Artefacts and Memories
The exhibition’s focal point resides within CMSG’s Discovery Room, which welcomes visitors with an extraordinary “Cabinet of Curiosity.” This assortment of artefacts spanning various stages of Mr. Lee’s life serves as a visual narrative, shedding light on key moments and personal insights. Among the remarkable artefacts on display:
- Tennis Racket presented to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew (1973): A testament to Mr. Lee’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle, the wooden tennis racket presented to him while in office showcases his youthful athleticism and love for outdoor activities.

- Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s Pelikan Ballpoint Pen and Fountain Pen (1950s to 2000s): These writing instruments offer an intimate glimpse into Mr. Lee’s daily routine as the Prime Minister, symbolizing his dedication to his responsibilities and the significance of his written words.
- Shoe and Shoe Moulds from Lee Hoi Wah Shoes (1980s to 1990s): Mr. Lee’s preference for simplicity is evident in his choice of footwear, exemplified by the formal black leather shoes he consistently ordered from Lee Hoi Wah. The display includes the original moulds of his feet, encapsulating his unassuming style.
- School Registry of Telok Kurau East School (1926 to 1941): The admission register from Mr. Lee’s alma mater, Telok Kurau East School, is a tangible link to his educational journey and early years under the name “Lee Harry.”
