Is Splitting Urination Normal in Men? Learn the Causes and Risks!

Splitting urinary tract infections are common among men. Learn about the causes and risks below!

Branched urine orsplit stream urinationThis condition is quite common in men. At first, it might sound like a joke that will make your family laugh. However, did you know?ParentsDoes a bifurcated urinary stream indicate a specific medical condition? So, is this condition dangerous?

6 Necessary Causes of Branched UrinationParents Know

Typically, when we urinate, urine flows out in a single stream. However, anyone can experience a slightly different situation: the urine stream suddenly splits into two. So, are there any specific factors that cause this?

1. Attachment

Adhesions are the most common cause of a split in your urine. This can occur when the edges of the urethra temporarily stick together. The urethra is the tube that carries urine (and semen in men) out of the body. Adhesions are caused by incomplete ejaculation. This condition is generally harmless and usually resolves within one to two days.

2. Urinary Tract Structure

Do you know?ParentsDid you know that everyone’s urethra is different? It may sound strange, but this difference is true, although it may not be significant. It’s also possible for some people to have two urethras, causing their urethra to split.

3. Meatal Stenosis

What is meatal stenosis? This is a condition where the opening at the tip of the penis is partially blocked. This condition usually affects uncircumcised boys. In addition to a bifurcated urine flow, symptoms of meatal stenosis can also include difficulty urinating and pain or burning when urinating. This condition certainly requires attention, especially if accompanied by persistent pain.

4. Phimosis

Ever heard of phimosis?ParentsThis is a condition where the foreskin becomes too tight. The foreskin allows urine to flow in two different directions. This condition is more common in uncircumcised men. Phimosis can also be accompanied by pain or infection, requiring medical treatment.

5. Prostate Enlargement

As men age, their prostates naturally enlarge. This condition can lead to various problems, including a double-edged urinary tract infection. Furthermore, those with an enlarged prostate also experience more frequent urination and a weakened urinary stream.

6. Urethral polyps

Polyps usually occur in the nasal cavity and cause sneezing. However, have you ever…ParentsEver heard of urethral polyps? As the name suggests, this condition affects the urethra, the urinary tract. Polyps themselves are small, flesh-like growths in the urethra. Generally, these polyps are benign and harmless.

ParentsThose who have experienced this may have also wondered about this. So, is it dangerous to have a split urine stream?

Quoted fromCleveland ClinicThis condition is actually very normal, so most people don’t need to worry. However, it’s possible that this condition could also be dangerous to your health.

If the split urinary flow only lasts for one or two days, it’s nothing to worry about. However, if this condition persists for a long time, especially if it’s accompanied by pain, you should see a doctor immediately.

If you have two different urethras, the potential for experiencing urinary tract infections is also greater, so it is best to consult a doctor.

Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics or antifungals if they detect signs of infection. The medications usually prescribed are erythromycin or miconazole. However, if the condition is caused by a urethral abnormality, surgery may be necessary.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination, bladder ultrasound, cystoscopy, and urodynamics. A doctor may also prescribe corticosteroid ointment if the splitting is due to phimosis. If prescribed medication, take it as directed.
