5 Important social media tips for parents

20 Oct, 2015
Are you playing safe on social media?

Are you playing safe on social media?

The need to share and be liked has consumed mankind since ages. So much so that the advent of the social media could not be spared from its wrath. And it’s evident.

The way facebook, instagram and twitter have conquered our lives, it seems, we have turned a blind eye to the damage they might be doing to our privacy. What's worst, the damage can be devastating when it involves our kids.

Few days back, the media was taken by storm when a couple from Thiruvananthapuram reported the misuse of their children’s picture with vulgar and sexually explicit comments on a website. The pictures were picked from the couple’s facebook account. A report was filed with the cyber cell who are still investigating the case.

So what would you do if that ever happens to your little one? As they say, a stitch in time, saves nine. So why not be careful and vigilant enough and use social media to create good memories?

We bring to you 5 essential tips to keep in mind while posting on social media, especially when it involves your kids.

Secure your virtual world

Secure your virtual world

Ensure that your virtual world is as secured as your real world. For this, make sure that all passwords to the social media accounts are well thought of, strong and exclusively known to you.

Also, remember to log out completely whenever you are using an external device.

Don't share pictures of your naked baby

Don't share pictures of your naked baby

Your little ones when naked might be making for cute pictures but someone else might be eyeing them in a very different way. But even if you are tempted to share, make sure that you do it in a trusted, closed group.
Turn off your location settings

Turn off your location settings

You don't have to be vocal about your whereabouts all the time. You never know when an innocuous location update can pose a threat to your little one.

Moreover, avoid posting pictures of your little one with suggestive backgrounds and landmarks as you might be serving more than what is required. Check-ins are okay but only when they are exclusive.

Be sure of your privacy settings

Be sure of your privacy settings

Isn't facebook and instagram made for sharing with the loved ones? If your answer is yes, then this should make you revisit your privacy settings. Make sure whatever you are sharing on social handles around your child is done within a close knit group.
Have a profile picture sans the child

Have a profile picture sans the child

That's the easiest thing you can do. You might have clicked one of the most cutest pictures of you both, but is it important to make it public? We suggest, preserve it for your own memories.
