The community of the Singapore Sports School was struck by a profound loss on October 11, 2023. A 14-year-old male student from the school’s esteemed badminton academy tragically passed away after a fitness trial. Subsequently, the teenager reportedly felt unwell after completing a strenuous 400-meter fitness time trial and was rushed to the hospital.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force received an emergency call from the school at around 6:50 p.m. The young athlete was promptly taken to the National University Hospital for immediate medical attention. Known for his potential, he was also a member of the Singapore Badminton Association’s national intermediate squad.

Singapore Sports School Student’s Fight for Life

In an interview with Channel News Asia, the boy’s uncle revealed that by the time doctors could attend to him, most of the boy’s organs were no longer functioning. Despite undergoing bypass surgery and an operation on his leg, the young athlete did not survive.

In response to this tragic incident, the school expressed deep sadness. They conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family and promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Additionally, they pledged to review their safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their students.

Pranav’s father, Mr. Madhaik, remembered him as a respectful and content boy who never demanded anything. His death is a great loss for his parents and the country. Pranav was always happy and positive. Even if he lost a badminton game, he would promise to do better next time. He was very determined to be a professional badminton player for Singapore.

Remembering a Bright Spark

The Singapore Sports School remembered the young athlete as a role model, both in sports and academics. Generally, he was a cheerful, pleasant individual who always maintained a positive outlook towards his training and studies. His passing is a significant loss to the badminton community, as he had shown great potential, winning several national age-group competitions.

To support the affected individuals, the school’s counsellors and staff are providing emotional assistance to student-athletes, coaches, and staff during this challenging period. The school stressed that the continued well-being of its students remains its utmost priority.

A Call to Action for the Singapore Sports School Community

In the wake of this tragic incident, let us come together as a community to support each other and remember the spirit, dedication, and love for the sport that characterized this young athlete. His legacy will continue to inspire us all.
