BaIn our busy lives, we sometimes forget about the world we’re leaving for our kids. However, as parents, we must ensure a cleaner future. Singapore is leading the way with an exciting project. They’re about to use eco-friendly low-carbon ammonia to power ships and generate electricity, setting a remarkable example of how we can protect our environment for our children.
Understanding Low-Carbon Ammonia
When hydrogen combines with nitrogen from the ambient air, it forms low-carbon ammonia. Low-carbon ammonia can be stored at room temperature and is easy to transport. This ease of storage and transport renders it a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, which not only harm the environment but also present significant logistical challenges.
Singapore’s Path to Cleaner Energy and Ammonia Innovation
Generally, Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong highlighted that ammonia, which forms when hydrogen combines with nitrogen from the air, can serve as a promising energy source for power generation and maritime shipping, constituting a clean fuel.

Furthermore, Singapore’s government collaborates closely with developers in this endeavour, underscoring the importance of ammonia bunkering with a minimum annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes.
Basically, the project has already garnered substantial attention, with local and foreign companies submitting 26 proposals, and six consortia have advanced to the next stage of development.
Additionally, Singapore is actively exploring alternative paths to achieve low-carbon energy, including nuclear energy. While no decision has been made regarding the deployment of nuclear power, the government is proactively gearing up to comprehend advanced nuclear energy technologies, focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs).
SMRs enhance safety and boast an energy production capacity of up to 300MW per unit.
Singapore is also investigating geothermal energy as a potential source of electricity. A study near Sembawang hot springs has identified geothermal energy sources at depths of 4km to 5km, showing promise for this eco-friendly energy alternative.

Our Children’s Future
The project aims to generate 55 to 65 megawatts of electricity from imported low-carbon or zero-carbon ammonia. This marks a significant step towards reducing Singapore’s carbon footprint and moving towards a more sustainable future.
More importantly, it sends a strong message to our children — that we are committed to preserving the planet for their future.

As parents, we all want the best for our kids. This includes a safe and healthy environment for them to grow up in. By supporting initiatives like the low-carbon ammonia project, we are contributing to a cleaner, greener future for our children.
Moreover, projects like these open up opportunities for our children to learn about sustainable energy solutions, inspiring them to become future leaders in the fight against climate change.
Joining the Green Revolution
We have a responsibility to our children to leave them a world that’s better than the one we inherited. To fulfil this duty, let’s stand together and support Singapore’s low-carbon ammonia project.
Engaging with your kids about this initiative, sharing the news on social media, and discussing it with your friends and family are important steps.
Every conversation brings us one step closer to a greener future. Let’s make sure our children inherit a planet they can be proud of.
