Singapore & China Shatter Borders: Say Hello to 30-Day Visa-Free Entry!

In a significant move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, Singapore and China recently announced plans to implement a reciprocal 30-day visa-free entry arrangement.

In a significant move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, Singapore and China recently announced plans to implement a reciprocal 30-day visa-free entry arrangement.

This agreement is expected to be operational in early 2024, as disclosed by the Prime Minister’s Officer (PMO) in a media release on Dec. 7.

The new visa-free entry arrangement was unveiled during the 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) forum held in Tianjin, China. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong mentioned that this initiative would fortify the bedrock of the Singapore-China relationship and stimulate direct flight connectivity between the two nations.

At present, Singaporeans are allowed a 15-day visa-free entry into China for purposes such as business, tourism, family visits, and transit. However, Chinese citizens holding ordinary passports must secure a valid visa to enter Singapore. The new 30-day visa-free entry policy will significantly ease travel between the two countries, further enhancing their bilateral relations.

Reviewing the Progress of Bilateral Cooperation

During the 19th JCBC forum, both nations reviewed their progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation. These include trade, sustainability, agriculture, finance, the Belt and Road Initiative, and public health. The co-chairs of the forum, Lawrence Wong and China’s Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, agreed that the cooperation had been comprehensive and progressive, evolving in line with each country’s development priorities.

Seizing Opportunities in Emerging Areas

Both leaders emphasized the need for adopting a forward-leaning approach to seize opportunities in emerging areas. They agreed to achieve high-quality outcomes that would benefit both nations and contribute to regional prosperity. This mindset manifested in their endorsement of the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (CSFTA) Further Upgrade Protocol, which was one of the 24 Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements announced at the forum.

These MOUs and agreements cover a diverse range of areas of bilateral cooperation. They involve various government agencies from both countries, including Singapore’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and Ministry of National Development.

It not only simplifies travel between the two countries but also symbolizes their commitment to strengthen mutual ties and cooperation in various sectors. As we anticipate the implementation of this arrangement in early 2024, let us look forward to the positive impact it will have on the people and economies of both nations.
