SG60 List: 15‑Year‑Old Singaporean Donates Bone Marrow to Save His Sister

SG60 List: 15‑Year‑Old Singaporean Donates Bone Marrow to Save His Sister

For SG60, we’re honouring 60 stories that reflect Singapore’s compassion, resilience, and community spirit. One of our most inspiring narratives comes from the Lim family, where a teenage boy’s decision transcended words—and became a living promise of hope.

“Let’s Do It”: The Brother Who Said Yes

Fifteen‑year‑old Austin Lim didn’t hesitate when doctors informed the family that only he and his brother were matching donors. His 13‑year‑old sister, Mira, had relapsed from leukaemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.

Without blinking, Austin said simply, “Let’s do it.” His calm courage left his parents stunned—and proud.

From Diagnosis to Recovery

  • January 2024: Mira was diagnosed with leukaemia. After treatment, she went into remission.

  • Early 2025: The cancer returned, more aggressively. A bone marrow transplant became essential.

  • 28 April 2025: Austin underwent the procedure. He felt nervous, yet confident: “I knew it was the right thing to do. … just don’t give up.”

Hope on the Way

The surgery was a success. Today, Mira’s blood counts are rising, pain easing, appetite returning, and Austin is back basketballing after a brief rest. Their recovery speaks of not just a medical triumph—but the extraordinary power of love and sacrifice.

A Family Guiding Others with Compassion

Their father, a veteran participant of Hair for Hope, has supported childhood cancer fighters since 2013. Finding himself in this journey as a parent of a patient brought a deeper understanding and empathy.

Today, he reminds families:

“You are not alone. Take it one day at a time. Hope is always there—even on the hardest days.”

A Brother, A Sister, A Nation’s Hope

Austin’s “Let’s do it” reflects more than familial duty—it embodies Singapore’s spirit: facing challenges together, with heart and conviction.

For SG60, this moment reminds us: our strength lies not only in institutions, but in deeds of the heart—one bone marrow donation at a time.
