SG60 List: Kindness at a Sushi Counter to Remember

SG60 List: Kindness at a Sushi Counter to Remember

As Singapore turns 60, the TAPSG60 List shines a light on the small, meaningful moments that define who we are as a nation. While milestones and medals have their place, the soul of Singapore is often revealed in everyday acts. Today, we begin the series with a story that unfolded not with fanfare, but with a smile—at the sushi counter.

A Simple Meal, A Deeper Meaning

Xena, like many Singaporeans, stopped by Sushi Plus for a casual meal. She picked out five plates of sushi, looking forward to a satisfying bite. But when she went to pay, something didn’t add up—literally.

A Mistake at the Counter

The cashier handed Xena a bill for $6, which didn’t make sense considering she had eaten five plates at $1.50 each. Politely puzzled, she asked if the bill was correct. The cashier confirmed it—but then double-checked and noticed the error. One of the plates had been accidentally keyed in as a “win gift,” effectively making it free.

Choosing Integrity Over Convenience

Many might have smiled, shrugged, and walked away with the deal. But Xena didn’t. Instead, she chose to point out the mistake—not because someone was watching, but because it felt right. That small act of honesty turned an ordinary dining experience into a heartwarming reminder of everyday ethics.

“I felt kinda joyful to be able to correct the mistake and pay the actual amount,” she later shared.

It wasn’t about the money—it was about the mindset.

Integrity as a Cultural Value

In a fast-paced society, it’s easy to overlook the little things. But Xena’s decision reflects a deeper thread in the Singaporean fabric: integrity, mindfulness, and mutual respect. These are not just values we teach—they’re values we live.

A Nation Built on Everyday Goodness

SG60 isn’t just about looking back; it’s about reflecting on who we are becoming. Xena’s story is a reminder that our future is shaped not just by innovation or infrastructure, but by the quiet choices made in food courts, MRT stations, and everyday interactions.
