What You Need to Know About Road Safety for Kids

5 min read

Road safety is a vital topic for discussion. Parents must be aware of how they could avoid road dangers to keep their kids safe. Yearly, many people died due to road crashes and accidents; it also causes injury to many, mostly youngsters. Concerning this, we could say that the risk is even higher in children as they are gradually given independence.

Along with this, theAsianparent had an opportunity to interview a significant person from 3M Asia on the importance of road safety.

Mr Amit Laroya from India is the senior vice president of Transportation and Electronics Business Group, 3M Asia. He stresses different angles, which would be significant and helpful for people regarding road safety.

In this article, you’ll read:

  • The Importance of Road Safety Awareness
  • Local Government and Community in Improving Road Safety of Children

Road safety aims to raise awareness and provide easy-to-understand educational messages while people are on the road. Aside from that, it plays a vital role in helping and protecting as many lives as possible.

As we all know, road safety exists to lessen and avoid the dangers people may face while on the road. Sadly, road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children and youngsters.

Additionally, a few key factors put our young ones at risk. It includes underdeveloped roadways, a lack of crosswalks, and poor visibility. These incidents are most common within low-income and middle-income countries.

Every child must have access to a safe journey on the way to their school and go back to their home. Children’s safety must be equal regardless of where they live as well as their background.

How Technology Could Improve Safety in School Zones

“We have over 80 years of experience in advancing transportation infrastructure and mobility globally,” said Mr Amit Laroya. “We are excited to bring this expertise to school zones across the globe.”

3M would help in improving road safety by installing high-performance road materials. They would also maximise technologies that will make road signs and crossing more reflective and visible for pedestrians.

Local Government and Community in Improving Road Safety of Children

Mr Amit Laroya emphasises the importance of partnership between the local government and community in implementing road safety. It would be the best collaboration in helping to reduce road incidents across the globe.

People, especially parents, must advocate for safer and more visible school zones. Both local government and the community could take action to enforce more precise school safety zone requirements and standards. It could be done through better demarcation and road signs.

Educating Road Users

Understanding the basics makes the foundation even more substantial. In implementing road safety, it would be vital to educate road users on how they can efficiently and safely use roads.

Here is the list of roles of the most common road users:

  • Motorists

It is vital to educate motorists on recognising school zones and road signs. Aside from that, it is also essential that they know the proper protocols when driving in these areas particular areas. It includes driving at reduced speeds and stopping at crosswalks.

  • Students

Local communities and schools must take action and educate students on the importance of following safety precautions in certain areas.

These include using pedestrian crossings like overhead bridges, zebra crossings, underpasses, and traffic signal lights. It is also essential that they know how to raise hands while crossing to alert motorists and avoid road bens when crossing the road.

  • Children

Children commonly learn road safety precautions in school. However, it would be best if parents could explain these precautions and practise them with their children. It would be beneficial, especially to young children unfamiliar with any road safety behaviours.
