With all the hype about new reading devices like the Kindle and other more modern forms of entertainment, many think that books and libraries may be on the brink of extinction. Well, in actual fact, Singapore residents are actually reading more than ever – if the borrowing rate at libraries is anything to go by. This is only one of the reasons why public libraries in Singapore could be your next family hangout place!
According to the National Library Board (NLB), a record 30 million books were borrowed last year, translating to an average of about 80,000 a day from the 22 Public Libraries across the island. The numbers, compiled between April last year and this month, represent a 9 per cent jump from the same period in 2008-2009. In a recent book exchange event organised by the NLB to encourage reading, a total of 73,000 books were exchanged among 6,600 participants.
So why not take your family out on a trip to the library this weekend? The young ones can develop their love for reading and participate in storytelling sessions organised daily. Even teens and adults can take part in reading workshops and book discussions. With all the programmes available, libraries are a good way to spend a peaceful afternoon, especially when your kids have to be quiet.
