How to get rid of cockroaches with these simple steps

2 Nov, 2009

Everybody has a different kind of cockroach problem. There are many ways on how to get rid of cockroaches but the effectiveness of these methods will depend a lot on you.

Insecticides

Insecticides

Though insecticides still remain the most preferred way of killing cockroaches, I went in for a more, shall we say organic, method. Somebody had told me that sprinkling boric acid in all the openings where cockroaches enter your home, makes them poison themselves. This did work to an extent for the roaches that crawled in. However, after a day or two, the roaches got smarter and the boric acid no longer deterred them. Please note that boric acid is not a good idea if you have cockroaches in your home that fly.

I read somewhere that a mixture of sugar and baking soda can be used as a homemade insecticide but I was not too keen on trying that method. The last thing you want, while trying to get rid of cockroaches, is to open your doors to other pests like ants and rats and so I didn’t even venture in that direction.
Don’t allow water to accumulate

Don’t allow water to accumulate

An interesting thing about cockroaches is that though they can survive months without food, they need a daily supply of water to continue thriving. If you cut off their source of water, they’re likely to perish. So try to keep your basins clean and don’t allow water to accumulate anywhere in your house. This is also a good practice to ward off the aedes mosquitoe.
Keep your house clean of droppings

Cockroaches also have a strange way of swarming. They detect droppings and usually follow the leavings of other cockroaches. If you keep your house clean of droppings, they’ll pretty much be leaving you in peace.
Pesticides

Of course if you are not comfortable using homemade remedies, you can always go in for the artificial pesticides like Shieldtox. Do make sure though that your kids are not at home when the spraying and fuming process is going on. More traditional families will simply leave Pandan leaves on the floor to keep those roaches away.
