Parents File Case Against Son for Failing to Produce Heirs

Parents File Case Against Son for Failing to Produce Heirs

"I have only one son. I spent all my savings on his upbringing and education," Sanjeev Prasad told the Times of India.

Indian parents file case against son and daughter-in-law for failing to produce heirs following their six-year marriage. This situation takes controlling in-laws to a whole new level. Moreover, they made matters more appalling by demanding $650,000 as payment.

Indian Parents File Case Against Son for Not Producing Grandchildren

A couple in India chooses to take legal action against their son and their daughter-in-law. They accused the younger couple of inflicting “mental cruelty” on them for failing to produce heirs. Mental cruelty is any behaviour that causes another person to suffer without using physical violence.

The Indian couple filing a complaint is the 61-year-old man, Sanjeev Prasad and his 57-year-old wife, Sadhana. They ask their son Shrey Sagar and his wife, Shubhangi Sinha, for a $650,000 payment.

According to BBC, the parents would want to have the $650,000 if the younger couple will not be able to produce offspring within the year. The older couple is currently living in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. They recently had an interview with the Times of India.

During the interview, they said that the sum is what they spent on their 35-year-old son, Shrey. The payment includes the $65,000 bill for Shrey’s pilot training in the United States. Aside from that, the parents also include the luxury car that they give them as a wedding gift.

The Indian couple has only one son; Shrey will only be the way to produce heirs. It could be the primary reason why they are putting this much pressure Shrey on to produce offspring.

“I have only one son. I spent all my savings on his upbringing and education,” Sanjeev Prasad told the Times of India.

“He returned to India in 2007 due to the economic recession abroad. He had lost his job and could not find another for over two years. I supported him financially during this period as well.”

Shrey’s father also added that he was the one who arranged his marriage with his 31-year-old wife, Shubhangi. He organised the wedding after Shrey finally secured a stable job.

The Younger Couple Is Causing Their Parents “Immense Pain”

The wedding that the father organised took place six years ago. Afterwards, the older couple ultimately decided to file a complaint against the couple. The reason revolved around the fact that the younger couple’s marriage lasted without any heirs. The father then accused the younger couple of “immense mental harassment.”

Additionally, Sanjeev Prasad said that the young couple lived in separate states because of their work. Aside from that, their daughter-in-law does not visit them as much as they wish. As per the Indian parents, their set-up is causing them “immense pain.”

How the Case Encompasses the Truth of Their Society

According to the Indian parents’ lawyer, AK Srivastava, the case “Portrays the truth of society.”

For them, children could be one of their life’s most significant investments. They are doing their part as parents to make their children capable of having better careers.

“We invest in our children, make them capable of working in good firms,” said the lawyer. “Children owe their parents’ basic financial care.”

Atty AK Srivastava also gave the young couple a choice. Either they will grant their parents a grandchild within the year or monetary compensation. Additionally, Atty Srivastava emphasises that their basis for taking legal action was “because of mental cruelty.”

“It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent,” said the lawyer. “They had been waiting for years to become grandparents.”

Many Indian couples face immense pressure from their family members to produce children in relation to this. Some Indian mums are reportedly experiencing physical abuse for not having a male heir.

5 Tips in Managing the Meddling of In-Laws

There are instances when in-laws could pressure you and your spouse to have a baby. In situations like this, it is essential that you know how to handle their good intentions.

Here are some tips from Family Education that you can do to properly handle meddling and pressure from your in-laws:

  • Maintain your wit and never lose your calm in front of them.
  • Make them aware that your childbearing decisions are your own business in a respectful manner. Calmly explain to them why they have no say in the situation or choice.
  • Keep an open mind and a calm head.
  • Hold your ground. Don’t share any details of your past romantic exploits with your spouse or exes.
  • Assuring your in-laws that you value their concern for you and your marriage is essential. After all, they are most likely looking out for your best interests.
