Family movie time is always fun when everybody comes together to head to the theatres (or to the couch!). While the pandemic may have affected footfall in theatres – thanks to all the much-needed restrictions – it hasn’t stopped the production of some awesome films.

We saw some great movies in the first half of the year, mostly seated comfortably at our homes with a big bucket of popcorn. Now as Singapore moves towards opening up, it is time to check out a list of new family movies 2021 has to offer.

From fairy tales to animated movies, from robot adventures to musicals, and from superheroes to real-life stories, there is a lot in store on the silver screen. Take a look and set your date!

  • Opening in June

1. Dreambuilders

Plot: This film from Denmark centres on Minna, a young girl who uses her newfound ability to teach her stepsister a lesson. And when her sister can no longer wake up, Minna has to enter the dream world to save her. We expect some tears shed and lessons learned from this one.

2. Spirit Untamed

Plot: Lucky Prescott’s life is changed forever when she moves from her home in the city to a small frontier town and befriends a wild mustang named Spirit. If you liked the previous free Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, then be sure to catch this.

3. Luca

Plot: The animated Pixar film follows Luca and his best friend Alberto, both of whom are hiding a secret. On the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. The movie is set to be released on Disney+ as well.

4. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

Plot: The lovable rogue is back! Bea, Thomas, and the rabbits have created a makeshift family, but despite his best efforts, Peter can’t seem to shake his mischievous reputation. Adventuring out of the garden, Peter finds himself in a world where his mischief is appreciated.

But when his family risks everything to come looking for him, Peter must figure out what kind of bunny he wants to be. This movie is bound to bring lots of laughter and your kids will love it.

1. Cinderella

Plot: This is the modern musical version of the classic fairy tale Cinderella. We loved Brandy and Whitney Houston in the last Cinderella remake, but we’re extra excited for this version!

2. Space Jam: A New Legacy

Plot: NBA superstar LeBron James teams up with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes for this long-awaited sequel. This time around, LeBron James and his young son find themselves trapped in a virtual space.

To get out, he has to lead Bug Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the other Looney Tunes gang in a match against a basketball team made up of professional players. We are sure this movie will weave its magic on the audience!

3. Black Widow

Plot: In this new release, we will find out how she turns from an international spy and assassin into a superhero. Don’t miss this awesome film from Marvel Studios.

1. Paw Patrol: The Movie

Plot:  Ryder and the pups are called to Adventure City to stop Mayor Humdinger from turning the bustling metropolis into a state of chaos. Get set for the exciting missions and high-stake rescues!

2. Hotel Transylvania: Transformia

Plot: Here’s the fourth and final instalment in the Hotel Transylvania series. Nothing much is known about this as of now, but we expect it to be as kooky as its previous three films.

1. The Boss Baby: Family Business

Plot: The Templeton brothers have grown up and apart. Tim is no longer a little boy and is now a stay-at-home dad while Boss Baby bro Ted is a hedge fund CEO. They have in fact drifted away from each other. Watch the movie to find out how they reconnect.

2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Plot: The movie, based on Marvel Comics, will focus on Shang-Chi; ‘The Master of Kung-Fu’. And, from the looks of the trailer, the anticipation is just growing greater!

1. Ron’s Gone Wrong

Plot: The story of Barney, an awkward middle-schooler and Ron, his new walking, talking, digitally connected device. The story revolves around an 11-year-old boy living in a world where the children’s best friends are digitally connected bots. Ron’s malfunctions set against the backdrop of the social media age launch them on a journey to learn about true friendship.

1. Encanto

Plot: A young Colombian girl has to face the frustration of being the only member of her family without magical powers. In fact, Encanto’s magic has blessed every child with a unique gift such as super strength and the power to heal. But, every child except Maribel Madrigal has these magical powers. Find out how the story moved.

2. Eternals

Plot: The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilisations! With a diverse ensemble cast (Angelina Jolie! Salma Hayek! Gemma Chan! Kumail Nanjiani!) and directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao, this is the 2021 Marvel blockbuster that fans are eagerly waiting to watch.

3. The Addams Family 2

Plot: The Addams get tangled up in more wacky adventures and find themselves involved in hilarious run-ins with all sorts of unsuspecting characters. Watch this sequel to the 2019 animated film, ‘The Addams Family’ to get your dose of creepiness

4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Plot: When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

1. Sing 2

Plot: Buster Moon and his friends must persuade reclusive rock star Clay Calloway to join them for the opening of a new show. Watch the movie to find out if they will succeed.

2. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Plot: The third movie of this reboot series brings back stars Tom Holland and Zendaya as titular characters Peter Parker and MJ.

New Family Movies 2021 Has To Offer on Netflix

If you are still not comfortable stepping out at the movie theatres, you can always watch some awesome movies on Netflix. Here’s a list of some new movies that should be on your list. 

1. Robin Robin

Plot: This sweet adorable short film is about a bird raised by mice who begins to question where she belongs and sets off on a daring journey of self-discovery.

2. Yes Day

Plot: A mom and dad who usually say no decide to say yes to their kids’ wildest requests — with a few ground rules — on a whirlwind day of fun and adventure.

3. Finding ‘Ohana

Plot: Two siblings from Brooklyn connect with their Hawaiian heritage — and their family — on a daring quest for long-lost treasure. They set off on an adventure of discovery, meeting new friends, as well as finding out all about their Hawaiian heritage along the way. It is a nice watch for teens.

4. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles: The Movie

Plot: When a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning, Leo is forced to rise & lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, & Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species- the Krang. 

5. Wish Dragon

Plot: Determined teen Din is longing to reconnect with his childhood best friend when he meets a wish-granting dragon who shows him the magic of possibilities. Both of them are in pursuit of Din’s long lost friend, Lina.

6. A Boy Called Christmas

Plot: The film is about Nikolas, a boy who searches for his father among the snowy white north. Watch the trailer and you will understand why we are so excited. 

Remember, if you are stepping out to the cinemas, follow all the COVID safety guidelines that are in place. Wear your masks and see to it that your kids don’t touch surfaces. Carry a sanitiser with you always. Stay safe and have a great movie time with your kids.
