Mulu National Park: Unleashing the Wild Side of Borneo for Southeast Asian Families

If you’re planning a trip to Mulu National Park, be prepared to travel by air. The only practical way to reach this remote wilderness area is by taking a flight. Luckily, Maswings, a subsidiary of Malaysian Airlines, offers daily flights to Mulu from three major cities: Miri, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.

To get to Mulu, you’ll first need to make your way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s main entry hub. From there, you can fly to Borneo and connect to one of the above-mentioned ports. Flight times vary depending on your departure point, with durations ranging from 30 minutes from Miri to 1 hour and 20 minutes from Kuching.

However, it’s important to note that heavy rainfall can sometimes cause flight cancellations. To avoid any disruptions to your travel plans, make sure to allow for a flexible itinerary and sufficient time to catch connecting flights and pre-booked activities.

Once you arrive at Mulu Airport, which is conveniently located just a few kilometres away from the park, take a short taxi ride to your accommodation. Major Southeast Asian airlines, such as Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, offer regular flights to Mulu from various cities in the region.

Best Time to Visit Mulu

To make the most out of your trip, visit Mulu National Park during the dry season (March-October). During this time, you can enjoy all the park’s attractions without worrying about slippery trails and mud. Be prepared for rain showers, though, by bringing a waterproof jacket or poncho.

Where to Stay

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has something for everyone’s budget and preferences. You can choose from chalets, lodges, and basic dormitory-style rooms. Some of the top accommodations include Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa, Royal Mulu Resort, and Mulu World Heritage Area Hostel.
