Morning sickness

If you have morning sickness, stock up on the following foods. They are known to be tummy friendly.

What's good for morning sickness:

  • Applesauce
  • Apricots
  • Avocado
  • Bagels
  • Bananas
  • Corn
  • Crackers
  • Cheese
  • Cereal
  • Chewing gum
  • Cider vinegar
  • Cucumber
  • Curry leaves
  • Dates
  • Fennel
  • Frozen yogurt
  • Fruit Juice
  • Ginger
  • Grapes
  • Lemon drops
  • Lemons
  • Mints
  • Milk
  • Oatmeal
  • Peppermint
  • Potato chips
  • Potatoes
  • Puddings
  • Raspberry leaf tea
  • Rice cakes
  • Soda crackers
  • Sorbet
  • Sour candies
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Yogurt smoothies

Stay away from during morning sickness:

  • Alcohol
  • Betelnut (Supari)
  • Brocolli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Caffeinated beverages like coffee and cola
  • Foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • Foods containing excessive seasoning
  • Fried eggs
  • Fried foods
  • Garlic
  • Greasy foods
  • High-fat foods
  • Onions
  • Sausages
  • Strong-tasting vegetables

It's also interesting to note that in a 2000 study by Cornell University evolutionary biologists, "the most-observed aversion was to meats, fish, poultry and eggs -- the foods that were more likely to carry harmful microorganisms and parasites before the advent of modern refrigeration and food-handling processes," The study went on to reveal that in "traditional societies with virtually no morning sickness, animal products are not a dietary staple. Plant-based foods -- and corn, in particular -- were found to be the dietary staple in six of seven societies with little or no morning sickness. The edible parts of the corn plant, the kernels, have very low levels of phytochemicals".

Remember that eating more or avoiding all of these may not necessarily work for you, try some and find out which food works for you. Also it's important to have a healthy diet during pregnancy, so do listen to your body about your needs.
