A Tiger-ific Lunar New Year at Singapore's Wildlife Parks

7 min read
A Tiger-ific Lunar New Year at Singapore's Wildlife Parks

Get a chance to meet actual golden tigers this Lunar New Year and have a roaring good time at Singapore's wildlife parks.

Get off to a roaring start for the Year of the Tiger and meet the symbols of strength and intelligence in the flesh at Singapore’s wildlife parks this Lunar New Year.

The spotlight is on the Malayan tigers, with special Lunar New Year themed enrichment activities prepared for them this festive period. Watch them show off their natural hunting behaviours and problem-solving instincts as they work to solve challenging food puzzles and be rewarded with their favourite treats.

At Singapore Zoo, be awed by the majestic 10-year-old male Malayan tiger, Sulong, as he extracts meat from a firecracker-shaped feeder suspended in the air. This tests his ability to reach elevated areas, mimicking situations in the wild where his prey may be hiding up in trees.

At Night Safari, meet the park’s latest additions to the Malayan tiger family, brothers Sali and Arhaa. Born on 27 December 2020, Sali and Arhaa were the first Malayan tiger cubs born in Night Safari in over two decades, making them a significant addition to the population of the critically endangered sub species under human care.

The curious cubs have since grown into handsome young juveniles with distinct characteristics. Arhaa is calmer and more reserved of the two, while Sali is assertive and more food motivated, often being the first in line when it’s mealtime.

Catch them with their mother, 9-year-old Intan, as they sharpen their hunting skills by breaking open a prosperity box or pinata to get at their favourite treats, amongst other themed enrichment activities. Tigers are extremely smart animals, and these enrichment activities help keep them physically and mentally stimulated.

Once you’ve learnt all you can about our tigers, put your tiger knowledge to the test. Look out for the roving rangers at Singapore Zoo’s tiger exhibit and complete a challenge to earn a pin.

While there are no big cats over at Jurong Bird Park, be on a lookout for the White-eared catbird over at Heliconia Walk as they also enjoy festive treats specially prepared by our keepers. Aside from their tiger-like markings, these birds earned their name because of their unique call, a harsh rasping note resembling cats.

Joining in the festivities are our animal ambassadors who will welcome you with auspicious greetings at animal presentations across the parks. Receive well wishes from the capybara at River Wonder’s Once Upon a River and let Sassy the cockatoo brings good tidings at the High Flyers Show as she soars in the air with red packets in Jurong Bird Park.

That’s not all, our sea lion, coatimundis and canines have also joined in the festive greetings at Singapore Zoo’s animal presentations –the Splash Safari Show, Rainforest Fights Back Show and Animal Friends Show.

Celebrations would not be complete without discovering your zoo-diac predictions! Across the wildlife parks, learn more about your zodiac predictions for the year and find out how to make the most of your 2022.
