The number of infertile couples has increased in recent years and is now estimated at 15 – 20 % of all couples worldwide.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a relatively new procedure which came about first in 1992 has become a powerful means of overcoming infertility in azoospermic patients in the last ten years.
In ICSI (pronounced “eeksee” or “icksy”) only one viable sperm from millions, is manually injected directly into an egg using an extremely delicate micro-manipulation technique. ICSI has revolutionised the treatment of male factor infertility; by reducing the chances of failed fertilisation compared to when conventional IVF is used.
