According to the Straits Times, the incident happened on Dec 30 at Lorong 16 Geylang at 11:47 am. A passerby captured it on video and it quickly got shared on social media.

29-year-old Jayselan N. Chandrasegar apparently used a 10cm-long blade to stab his wife, Ms Mayuri Krishnakumar, 26, twice in her abdomen and twice on her lower back.

The victim was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and is in stable condition.

Jayselan was arrested by police at 12.15pm at Guillemard Road, and has been charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.

Jayselan apparently said in court, “Mayuri is my wife. For the mistake that she did, I admit that what I did to her was wrong.”

“I only stabbed her twice, not more than that. I did not think that I’ll do such a thing to my wife.”

“I have a child at home, I couldn’t take it that she did this to me and my child.”

According to Channel NewsAsia, Ms Mayuri had just parted ways with Jayselan and was walking with someone else when the incident happened.

Jayselan apparently suffers from depression and is a former patient of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). He will be sent for psychiatric evaluation.

If convicted, he will be sent to prison for life, or jailed for up to 15 years, and may also be fined or caned.

What netizens are saying

The case has shocked Singapore, and reactions across social media have been divided.

Many of the men were found siding with the husband with the sentiment, “Unfaithful wife. Pity the husband.”

While the women were shocked how easily it was assumed that the wife was “unfaithful”.

One netizen opined, “If stabbing is acceptable due to unfaithfulness then we are going to see stabbings on the street everyday.”
