Kids can get bored on long rides, the following entertaining games in the car can help keep them happy in their seats until you reach your destination.

My daughter Cheyenne is 8, son Aloysius is 4. We spend a great deal of time travelling from one place to another in our family car. Before the TV in the car gave way, I didn't have to think of much activity for them. All I had to do was to play their favourite Tom & Jerry cartoon DVD to keep them occupied.

Although it was effective but it was definitely not creative and fun. Furthermore, loads of DVD began piling up in the car and kids began fighting over their choice of show. Furthermore, due to time & budget constraint, I could not get the TV fixed or changed. Thus, keeping the kids entertained, quiet and well behaved became a challenge. Fighting or squabbling between children was the last thing a driver need.

Thus, the following games we played during long rides that helps keep all of us happy and rooted in our own seats until we reached our destination.

#1. Vehicle Bingo game

Choose a car make ie. Honda, Citroën, BMW. Along the way, when your "make" appear, the first person to spot it will shouts BINGO. With younger child in the car, easier generics such as van or taxi can be used. For older kids, Specific car brand/model can be introduced to make the game more challenging. Eg. Citroën Grand C4 Picasso. Kids learn fast and remembers.

#2. List the occupations/ animals/ country

Everyone take turns to name an occupation. The list goes on and on and kids knowledge just expand as your drive along. Bringing them from one country to another and from one profession to another. It can be even cartoon characters, famous people, or even family names. Kids will even work harder to look through books to obtain more info just to prepare for the next game.

#3. Letter/ word game

To make it a fair game for both kids aged 4 and 8, I decided to let the younger one name any 3 letter words. Eg box, zoo, one, two etc.. My 8 year old daughter will name any 4 letter words eg. Four, five, tall, thin etc.. and I will name any 5 letter words eg. Seven, story, adult etc ... Each person takes turn to say one word and the person who can't continue within a specific time lose.

#4. White/ magnetic board

These are very useful tools/ toys for kids to draw on. Especially fun for hangman game. You can even use it to test their spelling as you travel. Best of all, no mess.

#5. Link a story

Start a story and everyone adds a sentence or two to create a truly unique story that is only heard in your own car. Sure to have a good laugh among the kids and helps to stimulate creativity.
