6 ‘free ideas’ to make the most of your weekend in Singapore

Come Friday, parents are always worried sick looking for another 'fun' activity to do with the kids and that's not considering the cost of most activities you find around Singapore.

Worry no more - be it a trail, cycling, picnic; there are tons of activities to plan around Singapore that will not strain your wallet.
#1 Enjoying a picnic in the park

#1 Enjoying a picnic in the park

Make the most of the outdoors and parks. Choose one that you don’t visit that often, so it keeps the kids excited. Make sure there is a nice play area for the kids or maybe a sand pit.

Pack up the snacks, the mats, a frisbee and head there for a lovely relaxed evening. Make sure you carry an ice box with loads of water and drinks and a bag full of snacks/ sandwiches/ rolls. If you are a bit more enthusiastic, book a BBQ pit at any of the parks and stay on till late evening.

You will be surprised to see how much fun the whole family has!
#2 Cycling

#2 Cycling

A popular family activity, East Coast Park and it’s many bicycle hire stores make this a popular weekend activity. Now with the new park connector open from East Coast Park to Gardens by the Bay, it’s an excellent cycling route for the entire family.

You can even choose to have dinner at the popular Satay by the Bay or at any of the several options along East Coast Park to wrap up the day before heading back.
#3 Hiking on a trail

#3 Hiking on a trail

If you are a family that loves the outdoors, then this activity is for you. Be it a trail into MacRitchie Reservoir- the more rustic Lornie Trail or the popular Tree Top walk, this one will excite the kids.

Make sure you start early before it gets hot. If you prefer a concrete walk, a walk through Henderson Waves will enthral the kids.

If you are really adventurous then, you can plan a day trip to Coney Islands.
#4 Kite Flying

Head to Marina Barrage with those kites and spend some precious moments with your little ones. You will be amazed to see the number of people doing the same. Perfect activity for a weekend evening, and even better to end it with a meal at the Satay by the Bay.
#5 Gardens by the Bay (East Entrance)

#5 Gardens by the Bay (East Entrance)

We often tend to overlook Gardens by the Bay (East) (located close to the Marina Bay Golf Course). A perfect area for a stroll, for kids to learn cycling, roller blading. This is also a popular spot to watch the fireworks during landmark days like Chinese New Year celebrations, New Year’s Eve and National Day.
#6 Chinatown/ Little India/ Orchard Road

#6 Chinatown/ Little India/ Orchard Road

Make sure you have this on your calendar every year. A walk down Chinatown during the Chines New Year period, Little India before Deepavali and Orchard Road during Christmas. The decorations on each of these roads during that period are symbolic to the culture of Singapore- the rich ethnic multiplicity that has brought about a seamless diffusion in the way Singaporeans go about their everyday lives.
