Best kite flying spots in Singapore

With the revival of kite flying as a popular hobby among Singaporeans and their families, we've sussed out the best kite-flying spots around Singapore.

Check out our list of best kite flying spots in Singapore:

Marina Barrage Green Roof

Marina Barrage Green Roof

This spot is so popular with kite enthusiasts and their families that the Singapore International Kite Day 2011 was held here. The roof is often crowded with families and friends on the weekends, especially in the afternoon. Most would sit down for a picnic as they "take it to the skies" with a myriad of kites. And as the sun sets, you would be in for a treat. Sit back and watch as serious kite aficionados fly their customised kites that come complete with fancy LED lights. The kids would definitely enjoy these LED kites brightening the skies with gorgeous colours.

Getting here is also a breeze especially by car or taxi. Alternatively, you can take SBS bus service 400 or the Marina Barrage shuttle service from Marina Bay MRT station.

Jurong Central Park

Jurong Central Park

One of Nparks newest parks, Jurong Central Park might be new and comparatively small (it’s only 8 hectares!) but it has gained some street credit among kite lovers and families looking for a good picnic and kite flying spot. Situated right next to Boon Lay MRT and Jurong Point Shopping Mall, it is the most accessible park around. Food establishment and shopping is just 5 minutes away so it is easy for you and the family to plan out your day if you choose to do some shopping or dinner after a day of kite flying.

This park is usually teeming with kite flying families in the late afternoons, even on weekdays! However, the atmosphere is warm, friendly and great for everyone to be in.

Safety tip:

Part of the park is bounded by the road and near the MRT, so as a safety precaution, enjoy this activity on the other side which is furthest away from the train track.

West Coast Park

West Coast Park

Like its East Coast counterpart, West Coast Park offers families a whole variety of things to do and kite flying is one of them! This waterfront park is usually windy in the afternoons and evenings - perfect for kite flying. There are also facilities like the children’s playground and a large MacDonald’s outlet that allow families to eat and play in the same area.

The park is accessible mainly by car or taxi. Or you can take SBS service 175 from Clementi MRT station.

Sembawang Park

Sembawang Park

Located all the way on Sembawang Road, it is a popular place for families living up north to head down to during the weekends for a stroll or a picnic. As it is situated facing the Johor Straits, this park receives lots of strong wind that is ideal for kite flying. The park is about 15 hectares, which means there is more than enough space to accommodate the growing number of kite enthusiasts and their families.

Accessibility to the park is however, less than desirable. The nearest MRT station is Sembawang MRT. It is about 5km there by foot and about 11 stops away on SMRT bus service 882. Hence, unless you drive (which takes about 10 minutes if you are coming from Sembawang MRT), getting there is a hassle.

Fortunately, the park has other facilities that might make your trip worthwhile. Wide grass patches allow you to sit down for a picnic as the kids frolic in the sun. Stretches of jogging and cycling paths are also available and are not as crowded as popular parks like East Coast Park. A hilltop restaurant, Beaulieu House nearby, serves fuss-free, delicious lunch and dinner menu.
