COVID-19 Infection In Singapore Inches To Nearly 3,000 After Record 386 New Cases Confirmed, 9th Death Also Reported

A record 386 new COVID-19 infections were recorded on Monday (13 April) in what is the highest single-day jump reported in Singapore since the beginning of the outbreak in January.

280 of the new cases are linked to known clusters, with the majority made up of foreign workers living in dormitories.

In its daily update, the Ministry of Health (MOH) also confirmed another coronavirus-related death.

The patient, a 65-year-old male Singapore Citizen succumbed to complications due to COVID-19 infection. He was first confirmed to have contracted the virus on 9 April and was since admitted to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

According to MOH, the hospital has reached out to his family and is extending assistance to them.

4-year-old Child Among The New Cases

A 4-year-old child is among the new cases announced on Monday.

The patient, a female Singapore citizen, is a local linked case. 

She tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning. She has since been admitted to the National University Hospital.

Based on the summary of cases released by the MOH, the child is a family member of two previous cases, case 1696 who tested positive for the virus infection on 8 April.

Her profile matches that of the pupil at E-Bridge Preschool in Jurong West whom ECDA confirmed to have tested positive for Coronavirus after getting infected by a family member.

The preschool centre, located at 140 Corporation Drive, will be closed for one week for cleaning and disinfection as per standard procedure.

Updates on previous cases

26 more cases of COVID-19 infection have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities. In all, 586 have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities.

The MOH also announced closure of the cluster at the private dinner function at SAFRA Jurong on 15 February as there have been no more cases linked for the past two incubation periods which lasted for 28 days.

Of the 1,158 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are stable or improving. 29 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit. 1,165 cases who are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19 are isolated and cared for at community facilities. Nine have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.

To date, Singapore’s total number of COVID-19 cases is now at 2,918. Contact tracing for the confirmed cases is ongoing.
