Basics on bedroom Feng Shui

11 Jan, 2012

Most homeowners focus on getting their humble abodes to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. However having the wrong ‘energy’ in your home could negatively affect relationships and general health. Here are some feng shui tips for the most private, and often neglected room of your home: The bedroom.

Keep electronics, workspaces and exercise machines out!

Keep electronics, workspaces and exercise machines out!

Your bedroom should be used only as a resting place. Electronics, desks and exercise machines symbolise wakefulness and can take up energy. If your partner insists on having a television in the room, place it in a television cupboard, and close the doors when it’s bedtime. Exercise gear or workspaces should be covered by a room divider or a screen.
Bed placement

Bed placement

The ideal location of your bed should be diagonally opposite the door, so that you can still see the door without being too close to it. This will give you a sense of safety, which will help you to relax and enjoy a good night’s sleep. Do avoid placing beds in the ‘coffin’ position, with the foot of the bed facing out the door, as this causes beds to be in the main path of traffic, which can cause stress and anxiety. Beds should also not be placed under structural beams, or ceiling fans as feng shui practitioners believe that this may negatively affect health or relationships. If this is unavoidable, be sure to hang a special feng shui bamboo flute to offset the negative effects of this placement.
Choose the right decorations

Choose the right decorations

Avoid displaying artwork or pictures that only feature one subject, as this represents solitude. While paintings of waterfalls may be relaxing to look at after a long day, feng shui masters recommend keeping all imagery of rivers, lakes or waterfalls out of the bedroom. According to feng shui, water symbolises money, but when placed in a bedroom, it could cause financial or relationship losses. When furnishing your room, choose to have a pair of furniture, like two nightstands, instead of a single piece, and go for furniture with rounded edges instead of sharp edges.
Colours

Colours

According to feng shui masters, warm, rich colours like cream, peach, beige, yellow, coral, tan or cocoa are good choices for bedroom walls. Light blues, light greens or even colours like mauve or lavender are cool, peaceful colours that will promote a restful night. For optimum feng shui goodness, bedrooms should feature a 50:50 ratio of the above-mentioned warm and cool colours. Stay away from colours that are too stark, like bright white, bright blues or deep grey shades, as these might disrupt a good night’s sleep.
Mirror rules

Mirror rules

If you want to have mirrors in your bedroom, be forewarned that there are quite a few locations you must avoid. For example, placing a mirror at the foot of your bed is said to encourage third party intrusions in your marriage and promote unfaithfulness. Also, since feng shui masters believe that mirrors bounce off energy, having a mirror directly over your bed or even next to your bed can cause restless nights.
