Get your glow on: 5 easy home skin remedies

12 Oct, 2013

Does your skin desperately need some TLC but you just don't have the time to step out to the beauty salon? Fear not mummies! We reveal 5 simple ingredients found in your very own kitchen which are just perfect to rejuvenate your skin! Find out what they are along with 2 easy, homemade face mask recipes which cleverly combine several ingredients talked about in the article. Get your glow on ladies!

1. Yogurt

1. Yogurt

With a wide range of benefits, yogurt should be your skin’s best friend. Not only does it aid sunburn and acne but it has also been proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This is done through the lactic acids found in the yogurt, which help to remove dead skin while tightening your pores. Simply slather a layer of its creamy goodness onto clean, dry skin and let sit for 20 minutes before washing. You should feel a difference almost instantly!
2. Honey

2. Honey

A great substitute for sugar in drinks and food with a number of vitamins and minerals - it is no surprise that honey works great on your skin too. Honey contains antiseptic properties that fight bacteria in acne and blemishes. It also aids in removing excess oil and moisture from the skin. Apply honey to entire face as a mask or directly to problem areas, leave for 15 minutes before washing off. Your skin will be left feeling fresh and supple.
3. Oats

3. Oats

The magic of oats lies in beta-glucan, which forms a protective film over skin while penetrating and removing dead skin cells. Along with its powers of exfoliation, oatmeal helps lighten and even out acne scars by stimulating collagen deposition and activating immune cells within your skin. Mix oatmeal with warm water and rub gently in a circular motion on skin for the perfect, natural exfoliation.
4. Potatoes

4. Potatoes

Not so good on the figure but oh so good on the face! Probably the cheapest and simplest of natural remedies, potatoes possess mild, bleaching properties that aid in lightening those tiresome dark spots. Grate a potato and let it sit on your skin for 15 minutes – your skin will feel firm and hydrated. Alternatively, try placing some chilled potato slices over your eyelids to lighten dark circles and soothe tired eyes.
5. Cherries

5. Cherries

We aren’t talking about those sugar-soaked treats you find in your cocktails at the bar. We are talking about fresh, blood-red cherries, packed with loads of antioxidants that work marvels for your skin. Being out in sun all day can rob your skin of its natural luster and antioxidants. Combat this by restoring your natural glow. Mash a handful of cherries into a paste and apply to skin for healthy, radiant skin.

HONEY&YOGURT

For oily skin: Combine 1 teaspoon each of yogurt, honey and chopped hazelnuts with 4-5 drops of lemon juice. Mix well before applying to clean, dry skin. Leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

For dry skin, swap your lemon juice for olive oil!

To exfoliate: Combine 1 tablespoon dry oatmeal with 2 tablespoons cherry juice. Apply mixture gently to face, moving in a circular motion. Leave in for 5 minutes before rinsing and drying.
