Eye Spy the New 3M Polarizing Light

15 Jun, 2010

We have gained a much better understanding of how lighting affects the way people work through studies and research in the recent years. One of these was a study was carried out in 2002 in the US looking at the relationship between lighting in classrooms and the children’s performance in schools. The results showed that children learned significantly more when there was daylight in school, as opposed to none.

It was concluded that this was due to better vision, as a result of one or more of the following factors – higher illumination levels, better colour rendering, improved spectral content of daylight, reduction of flicker from electric lighting and greater mental alertness from the response to daylight. The interesting thing was that, although the study was focused on daylight, most of these factors also apply to artificial lighting as well.

Closer to home, inadequate or even overpowering lighting has contributed to the increasingly worrying prevalence of myopia in our young children. Surveys have found that in Singapore, 34 per cent of children aged 7-9 have already started to wear glasses, almost double that of most other developed countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and the USA. One of the ways to help reduce myopia in our children is to ensure that they have sufficient lighting, as good lighting design can improve vision, alertness and mood and prevent problems such as glare and flicker, which are significant causes of myopia.

3 M Polarizing Light

Designed especially for children

Unlike ordinary table lamps, 3M™ Polarizing Light has been specially designed to successfully reduce glare and provide effective illumination. The polarizing filter feature in the lamps allows only a comfortable amount of light to pass through it, and the 3M™ Polarizing Light Technology diffuses direct and reflective glare by 50 to 80 per cent on reading materials and work surfaces to improve eye comfort. This increases overall reading efficiency and helps protect your child’s eyes from the glare. The design is also perfect for children as the handy, flexible structure allows for height and light intensity adjustments. What’s more, this ensures that the lamp’s base does not get in the way of the writing space, giving the kids plenty of room to work. Other child-friendly features include the anti-skid pad on the bottom of the weighted base, which guarantees that it is stable and does not get knocked over easily.

*The amount of reflected glare on reading material is dependent on viewing angle.

Great for adults too!

We understand that you want to protect your child’s eyes, but do think of yourself as well! The 3M™ Polarizing Light is suited for adults too, especially those working long hours. Whether at home or at work, the lamp is useful for reducing the strain and discomfort on eyes, and thus, unlike common lighting, the 3M™ Polarizing Light prevents problems such as eye fatigue, headaches and frequent tearing. The sleek and stylish designs come in black, white and metallic silver versions and would fit seamlessly into any workplace or home office. Simplicity and functionality is key to the design as the lamp is strong, durable and very easy to assemble. On top of all that, the energy-saving bulbs used save you money, making the 3M™ Polarizing Light a worthy investment.

There are currently five models of table lamps including TL1000, CL1000, CL2000 and the newest additions, CR1000 and CR2000 and one floor lamp model, FL1000. 3M™ Polarizing Light is available at all major retailers, such as Best Denki, Carrefour, Home-Fix DIY Store, Popular Bookstore, Prologue and Urban Write.
