Cuddling is a show of intimacy and a sign of protectiveness. Yet, it is being commodified and packaged to sell in the latest trend to hit Japan.

Share my bed sir?
The newest shop to offer this service is called Soine-ya, which stands for ‘bed sharing’. The services offered here are seemingly innocent and range from gazing into the girl’s eyes (for three minutes), resting your head on her lap (also for three minute blocks) to the more ‘intimate’ cuddling. The services don’t come cheap and prices range from $13 for resting a hand on an arm for three minutes to $80 for an hour of cuddling.

Healing touch
This phenomenon is not unique to Japan with an American based site promoting the ‘healing power of touch.’ According to thesnuggery.org which was started by post-grad student, Jacqueline, The Snuggery is a place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and focus on the simple restorative pleasure of touch. She says, “Though science has unquestionably supported the psychological and physical benefits of non-sexual touch, Americans distinctly lack it.”

Touching to combat stress
In this day and age, perhaps all people want is a touch of human affection and that is why such ‘cuddle’ services are gaining popularity. According to scientific research, engaging in touch reduces the amount of the stress hormone, Cortisol.

Cortisol is known to suppress the immune system and that is why people tend to get sick more often when they are stressed. Thus, the power of touch can play an important role in reducing stress and strengthening our immune systems.

Cuddle for the weekend
So it being Friday, why don’t you leave work on time and rush home to snuggle up with your partner and engage in a little restorative, rejuvenating and fun cuddling time that signal a great start to the weekend.

Tips for a good cuddle
1. It’s not always about sex – it’s not always a precursor or post sex activity, sometimes cuddling with your spouse can just be about just holding them close and delighting in their being.

2. Take your time and enjoy the feel of having someone close to you.

3. Be comfortable – use whatever makes you the most comfortable even if it means it’s not sexy.

4. It should not only be restricted to husband and wife – kids deserve a good cuddle sometimes.
