5 ways to have your husband spend time on you... and not on social media

26 May, 2016

Our lives appear to be governed and monitored by social media today, and here are some tips on getting around it

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. There are now a ton of social media platforms that eat up our time.

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. There are now a ton of social media platforms that eat up our time.

These social media platforms may seem interesting by allowing us to connect with our long-lost friend from that tuition class or finding out that the geek in your secondary school is now in a relationship, making for juicy gossip.

They also take away time that we will normally spend with our loved ones. We've come up with a (hopefully) full-proof plan of things you can do to make sure that your husband will spend more time on you.... and not on social media!

#1 Make activities more fun than social media

#1 Make activities more fun than social media

Social media is distracting, it provides a simple pleasurable activity that one can get lost in for hours at an end. Well, before social media, there were books, the television or the radio. While those activities are not as captivating as Facebook, they are also distractions that take time away from you.

The solution to both problems are similar, plan activities for the family. It can be something as exciting as going on a hike through Bukit Timah nature reserve for the weekend to a easy simple task as helping you prepare Sunday's lunch. The most important thing is to spend time together and enjoy the quality time spent.

#2 Switch off too

#2 Switch off too

This may seem like an obvious solution, but you will be surprised how many fail to do it.

The addictive nature of social media will appeal to both of you. Putting down your smartphone or closing the lid of your laptop is the first step you can take to spending more time with your husband. After all, if he sees you on Facebook commenting about your friend Brenda who just got into trouble again, he will be tempted to check his own account.

So, switch off your phone (all the way! Do not just lock it and leave it there as a distraction) and spend some quality time with your loved ones!

#3 Leave it off together

#3 Leave it off together

Like every other household, I'm sure you have mobile device with access to the internet lying around the house. The laptop at the coffee table, the tablet by your bedside or your smartphone on the dining table. All these makes it convenient for you to check your social media. After all, it seems like such an easy phrase that it will only take a second to see how many comments you received on the post you made about your friend.

That "second' will turn into minutes and before long, the only time spent with your husband will be having the both of you lying down beside each other browsing Facebook together.

When you want to spend quality time, make sure that all forms of distractions are not in the way. You will find that if the devices are not so conveniently placed or always there in the corner of our eyes that we will not be drawn so easily to social media.

#4 Go out

#4 Go out

Singapore is known as the Garden City. The new image of our fair nation as a hub for technology and development does not detract from the fact that our island is full of parks and nature reserves. There are also a large amount of theme parks available for you to frequent.

Besides the joy of having your loved ones for company, being outside and having some fresh air will be preferable to the air-condition environment you are stuck in from 8 to 5. Engage in some exercise and you will feel good about yourself too!

#5 Talk (about non-Facebook events)

#5 Talk (about non-Facebook events)

In our era of texting, Skype calls and tweeting, we may have missed out on the importance of having regular face-to-face conversations. Our body language, tone and facial expressions convey information that we can easily miss out when people are just texting each other. Get your husband to take some time off and sit down with you for a conversation over your day, or even the activities that you both just did (as mentioned in the previous few points).

Now, close your laptop screen, lock your phones and find your husband for some activities to do with!

Before you do, drop us a comment below.
