Violet Oon's Kitchen: A great place for delectable Nyonya cuisine

If you're looking for delicious Nyonya cuisine, Violet Oon's Kitchen is definitely worth checking out.

Violet Oons Kitchen

Tucked away on Bukit Timah Road is Violet Oon’s Kitchen, a quaint and homey restaurant run by Singapore’s very own food ambassador Violet Oon.

With its cozy and warm ambiance, the restaurant is an ideal place for a romantic date for busy parents, or simply just a venue where the entire family can enjoy food that is reminiscent of Grandma’s home-cooked meals.

In particular, the restaurant serves up a delicious array of South East Asian food (sometimes with a British twist!).

While Nyonya or Peranakan food takes the helm, the menu also showcases a mix of Chinese, Indian, Malay and British dishes that reflect not only Violet Oon’s own cultural heritage, but, in a way, the ethnic diversity of Singapore as well.

Here’s a peek at some of the treats that Violet Oon’s Kitchen has to offer:

Violet Oons Kitchen

Featured above is a starter — Ngo Hiang (S$15.00++) — a truly delightful way to start any meal.

This appetiser is actually a delectable mix of fresh prawn, crab meat, pork and water chestnut, seasoned beautifully with five-spice powder and wrapped in a beancurd skin that is deep-fried till it is crispy.

Dip one of these delicious parcels in the fiery sambal, pop it into your mouth and you’re in Nyonya food heaven!

The Kuey Pie Tee (S$18.00++, featured above) is another great way to start a meal. You’ll love the subtle flavour of bamboo shoots and turnips poached in a prawn bisque.

Served in a deep-fried, crispy ‘top hat’ cup and topped with a tasty prawn, this entrée definitely gets two thumbs up.

If you love your greens, then the dish featured above — Spicy Winged Beans (S$11.00++) — is a must-try. The fresh, crunchy sliced winged beans are tossed with pounded dried prawns.

Everything comes together in a delightfully sweet and sour sambal belachan dressing, which is topped with dry-fried grated fresh coconut and sliced shallots.

Shown above is the Fish Tempra (S$24.00++), a deliciously tangy and sweet traditional Nyonya dish.

Golden-brown fried fillets of baby sea bass are topped with a sweet and sour sauce made up of sweet soy sauce, lime and chillies, which add just a hint of spiciness to the overall flavor.

Served with Jasmine Rice and atchara (pickle), this dish is a must-try.

Beef Rendang is synonymous with Peranakan cuisine and the Beef Rendang at Violet Oon’s Kitchen(S$24.00++, pictured above) certainly won’t let you down.

The beef is succulent, melt-in-your-mouth goodness flavoured with a complex mix of spices.

It sits in a silky, creamy coconut milk gravy that is tinged with the tang of kaffir lime leaves and the earthiness of bay leaves.

Fragrant Nasi Kuning, a traditional Indonesian rice dish cooked with coconut milk and turmeric, and atchara complement the rendang perfectly, making it a truly memorable dish.

While you wash down the delicious fare at Violet Oon’s Kitchen with refreshing drinks such as Honey & Calamansi (S$7.00++, pictured above left), or Passionfruit, Lime, Orange and Grapefruit Soda (S$8.00++, above right), it’s best you also get ready for some sensational sweet treats to finish your meal.

Violet Oons Kitchen

The Bubor Cha Cha Panna Cotta (S$11.00++, pictured above) is a delightful marriage of an Italian panna cotta with Nyonya flavours. Wobbling at the bottom of the glass is a creamy, coconutty panna cotta.

On top of it is a flavoursome medley of yam, sweet potato, sago and shredded agar agar, all drizzled with gula melaka and coconut cream.

Violet Oons Kitchen

If you are a fan of Western desserts, then you must try this to-die-for Sticky Toffee Date Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream (S$13.00++).

The warm pudding sits pretty in a divine caramel sauce that has a blob of vanilla ice cream gently melting into it, making for a moist, rich and sweet tooth-satisfying dessert.
