Top 9 most dangerous toys

27 Jun, 2013

Did you know that each year many toddlers die or suffer injuries from playing with dangerous toys? Here’s our list of what NOT to buy.

Kids VS Dangerous Toys

Kids VS Dangerous Toys

A study done by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of America has found that toy-related injuries were responsible for the death of up to 22 children as well as 220, 500 emergency room visits every year. The report looked at injuries affecting children under 15 and found that most deaths were caused by asphyxiation or collisions associated with riding toys, scooters, toy pegs, and rubber balls. There has not been a similar study done in Singapore but we are more than willing to wager that yes, our kids are also getting hurt by dangerous toys that promised hours of endless fun. In order to help prevent the statistics from increasing in Singapore, we made a list of the most dangerous toys you should avoid buying and why you need to get rid of them – A.S.A.P.
1. Lawn Darts For Kids.

1. Lawn Darts For Kids.

These darts were recalled after an excessive number of injuries. Whoever thought that tossing around sharp pointy things could pose a threat to kids, right?
2. “Baby Friendly” Hammocks.

2. “Baby Friendly” Hammocks.

Buying a so-called "baby friendly" hammock is a pretty dangerous idea; mostly due to the fact that the hammock has no "support bar" to hold it open. Therefore, your tod could easily become entangled in the hazardous toy.
3. Trampoline.

3. Trampoline.

Again, jumping up in the air sure is fun but you know what’s not as fun? Flying off said trampoline. Trampoline injuries led to 98,000 trips to the emergency room in 2009 alone. Common toy-related injuries and/or accidents include: Choking or asphyxiation from small parts of the toy. Cuts by sharp parts of the toy. Motor toy vehicle incidents. Chemical substance poisoning.
4. B.B Gun.

4. B.B Gun.

If you have more than one kid running around in your home – a B.B gun does not belong there. Unless, of course, you have a secret desire to have one kid shoot the other in a fit of sibling rivalry and to have hell break loose. If you do…then by all means, buy your kids them B.B guns.
5. Razor Scooter.

5. Razor Scooter.

Did you know that injury from non-motorized scooters is the leading cause of toy-related injury and death. The CPSC reports these injuries involved lacerations, contusions, and abrasions to the child’s face and head that could lead to death.
6. Small Rubber Balls.

6. Small Rubber Balls.

The CPSC reported that toy-related deaths in children younger than 15 increased to 17 fatalities in 2010, up by 2 from the previous year. Nearly half of these toy-related fatalities were attributed to choking on balloons, small balls, and rubber balls.
7. Easy Bake Oven.

7. Easy Bake Oven.

Over a million Easy Bake Ovens were recalled between 2005 and 2006 due to numerous reports of children baking their fingers instead of treats.
8. Wii.

8. Wii.

When kids get excited – they jump, they scream and they basically move around a lot. Now with the usual position of the Wii in the living room, they might trip over a table, the sofa or even go through the window. So when it comes to the Wii – proceed with caution. You have been notified.
9. Action Figures.

9. Action Figures.

To your kids, action figures look tastier than a McDonald’s Happy Meal. They will try swallowing action figures faster than a blink of an eye. So double check the toys you have bought for your kids or are planning to buy. Or else, you might have to make that unplanned trip to the emergency room.
